Research Plant Virologists Meet at Fruit Laboratory

The Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory hosted the annual meeting of research plant virologists led by Dr. James E. Martin of Virginia Tech. About 20 scientists from across the United States and Canada discussed growing virus free fruit trees and sharing propagating material with nurserymen for commercial orchards. Dr. E D Hickey guided a tour of research plots highlighting viruses in fruit trees and the heightened risk to dwarf trees, with note on Prunus stem pitting in eastern peach orchards.

Strother Death Investigation Sees Mixed Messages

Medical Examiner Dr. Douglass Hill said Strother was definitely assaulted and an autopsy confirmed foul play after his body was found near Richard Cather’s property on Sept. 2. Sheriff’s deputies learned of the report only yesterday due to a mix up while Strother was buried Sept. 6 at Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
