The Senate approved a $27 billion tax cut bill with a campaign finance amendment and sent it to a conference with the House. The bill, backed by Democrats for individual relief, faced GOP opposition over funding for presidential campaigns and could be trimmed by the conference committee.
India says four Indian F86 Sabre jets shot down three Pakistani war planes 30 miles northeast of Calcutta during clashes along East Pakistan borders. One Pakistani fighter escaped. two pilots reportedly captured. Both sides claim heavy fighting near Jessore and border regions as crisis deepens.
In Washington the Senate approved a Democratic backed amendment to fund presidential campaigns by 52 to 47 with Spong voting yes and Byrd voting no. Later the chamber passed a $27 billion tax cut with Spong supporting and Byrd opposing.
Washington AP outlines major provisions of the 27 billion tax-cut bill passed by the Senate. It boosts personal exemptions and standard deductions, repeals a car tax, expands child care deductions, raises withholding, restores a machinery credit, aids export income, allows import surcharges and quotas, and permits voters to earmark 1 to 2 dollars for campaign financing on tax returns.
The Senate Judiciary Committee backed President Nixon's Supreme Court nominees Lewis F. Powell Jr. and William H. Rehnquist. Powell's nomination passed unanimously while Rehnquist moved to confirmation 12 to 4 with four dissenters. In a surprise move yesterday a murder indictment was presented to a Winchester Corporation Court grand jury against Louise Haines 18 of Woodland Ave and a true bill was returned. The 18 month old Tracey Braithwaite daughter of Allen Eugene Braithwaite and Mrs Linda Lou Haines Braithwaite died of multiple injuries after the father took the child to Winchester Memorial Hospital. The babysitter said the injuries occurred from a fall from a bed. A capias was issued for the defendant. The indictment was among 15 returned against 14 defendants in a day long session. The hoop of cases included another murder charge against Thomas James Lewis 44 of Orlando Fla in connection with Leon Green. Trials set for Feb 3 and Jan 13 for other defendants. The defendant remains jailed on $25 000 bond.
Richard A. Slaughter III, 19, a College of William and Mary student, faces a parole board review for selling wine to a minor months after receiving a governor Linwood Holton pardon. Court records show Oct 14 hearing and six months probation with possible dismissal if no further trouble.
Cold snap grips the region with a 21 degree low reported at the Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory. Yesterday’s high barely reached 34. Meteorologists warn of possible snow tomorrow with a mid-20s low tonight and a 60 percent chance of precipitation.
A gunman in Army fatigues opened fire at a Baltimore PPG Industries brush plant. Five workers were killed and three others wounded, including a police officer. the assailant Raymond D. Ferrellel was shot by officers and remained in critical condition. Ferrellel, 30, had been absent from work that day before the attack.
Commonwealth's Attorney Blandford said evidence in the fatal shooting of Virginia State Farm guard Capt Raul Monte in Powhatan County will be shown to a grand jury on December 14. Two inmates faced trial when a scuffle led to the guard's death and another guard's injuries.
