A major fire tore through Front Royal destroying about a dozen buildings. The blaze caused extensive milling damages and preliminary estimates place losses around 25 dollars thousand, with crews battling the flames for hours before containment.
A devastating blaze in Krent Royal Warren County wiped out more than a dozen industrial and residential buildings. Firemen from Winchester Front Royal Strasburg and surrounding areas battled the flames despite a limited water supply, with early reports pinpointing a flour mill fire possibly sparked by an overheated grain bin or electrical fault. By 1 p.m. several structures including C C Proctor’s flouring mill and the Warren Milling Company were lost, and authorities feared further spread along Main Street.
The Shubert musical revue The Passing Show from New York’s Winter Garden delighted a large audience at the Empire Theatre last night. The two act production boasted 26 scenes with lavish costumes, strong dancing by Margaret Wood and Jack Dempsey, and a witty cast led by Sam Howard and Will Philbrick.
S E Fisher of Strasburg received 250 dollars from George W Haddox of Winchester for injuries from a Christmas 1920s bus crash on the Valley pike near Winchester. Fisher, hurt by an iron rod, suffered broken ribs and pleurisy after a car driven by Haddox hit the bus driven by Hodge. Hodge had already received 73.75 dollars for bus damages.
In Somerville New Jersey on November 21 the Somerset county grand jury heard a chronology of events the night of September 14 surrounding the Hall Mills double slaying. Edward L. Dechart died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital Harrisonburg after injuries from a car crash near Mr Jackson three weeks earlier. Born December 13 1856 in Hagerstown Maryland he co founded Spirit of the Valley in Harrisonburg 1877 with his father Daniel Dechart later joining W Dechert Company insurance. He married Mary Alice Garber in June 1880.
A U S jury in Pensacola Florida found former Governor Sidney J Catts not guilty of peonage after brief deliberation alleging he held two pardoned former inmates as slaves on his farm. The case concerned bondage of two African American workers during his term.
The Supreme Court of Appeals at Richmond reversed the Clarke county circuit court and awarded Chapman's administrator $10,000 plus costs for a 1919 Berryville crossing death. Amos Chapman was killed when a motor truck was struck by train No. 13 as bells failed and a rapid schedule was tested. Two children died, one injured, and Earickson's family collected damages. Chapman’s widow survives with two children.
