At CHRIST CHURCH New Zealand a four story Ballantyne Bros store burned in a spectacular blaze. Forty two people were dead or missing, 28 bodies recovered, 13 listed as missing, and a 29th death occurred in hospital. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours as the building collapsed and victims were seen among the debris.
Shanghai reports inflation climbing as the Chinese dollar falls to a record low of 104,000 per dollar over 48 hours. Analysts cite lack of confidence due to U S policy signals, including Marshall's proposed 300 million dollar aid plan over 15 months, and its adverse effect on China’s fast moving economy.
Paris reports a surge of labor action as 72 percent of France coal miners strike and Renault workers join in. Center parties pursue formation of a strong government to handle the crisis.

Petrie Jr. for check writing and Kirby Miller for shooting at a motor vehicle. Circuit court Judge Elliott Marshall presided.
Senate investigators heard that Aviation Electric Co paid Maj. Gen. Bennett E Meyers 17972.14 in salary and padding from 1941 expenses and footed a 10000 bill for decorating his Washington apartment. Meyers acknowledged the gift saying Lamarre paid for the decorating as a gift to him.
Ottawa reports Canada begins austerity to curb outward flow of United States dollars. Decrees limit fruit to motor cars curb pleasure travel and impose heavy taxes on durable goods built from U S materials.
Two ex-convicts, Robert Winslow and Buford Sennett, surrendered after a 12 hour siege near Neillsville Wisconsin. They admitted to killing Carl L. Carlson 25 and raping Janet Ann Rosenblatt 19 during a Friday night ride. Carlson's body was found chained to a stone in a Wisconsin River tributary.
The Virginia Council on Health and Medical Care schedules a Thursday 2 p.m. session at Handley library to discuss medical care in the Shenandoah Valley. Dr. H. B. Mulholland of the University of Virginia will speak, with William S. Meacham inviting local organizations such as tuberculosis and cancer groups PTA clubs and civic groups. Senator elect Harry F. Byrd Jr. will preside.

Norfolk reports Maj. Gen. William H. Sands announces the 29th Infantry Division Virginia National Guard has exceeded 1000 enlistments in a nationwide drive. Current totals show 1101 enlisted men 101 officers and seven warrant officers in the state.
Dr Kay resigns as pathologist and director of laboratories at Winchester Memorial Hospital and as pathologist for Winchester Clarke and Frederick counties to take another state appointment. Resignation announced by Dr H B Breyfogle Virginia chief medical examiner. Kay and family reside at 333 West Cork Street. He held the hospital post one year.
Final day of the Frederick county deer season drew many hunters despite bad weather. Early reports credit high activity with dozens of deer killed across Shenandoah and Warren counties, including a 115-pound buck near Hayfield. The scene included named locals and a mix of parties eyeing closing-season success.

ROANOKE November 18. Plans are under way to offer graduate courses in home economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The addition would make them the only such courses in the state. Arrangements are being coordinated by Radford State Teachers College and the State Board of Education, said Dr. Newman.
