Legionnaires stage a noteworthy celebration in a highly creditable manner. Armistice Day program details remain in readable fragments highlighting community involvement and ceremonial conduct.
The Armistice day parade and celebration in Winchester honored veterans with more than 100 Legionnaires marching along Cameron street to the George Washington Hotel. The event featured the firing of a Belgian cannon, flag displays, and performances by local bands and cadet units. Human Fly Harry Gardner drew a crowd as he scaled the George Washington Hotel after the parade.
Special to The Star from Berryville Virginia reports very low election participation due to reconoitation. In Clarke county only 103 voters braved the elements to back the primary nominees and constitutional amendments. The ticket results list several county and district offices with vote totals, while social notes mention residents traveling and visiting family.
The Star reports special Dollar Day sales at leading Winchester stores next Wednesday and Thursday November 16 and 17. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event with 10 000 copies of a Star edition and 5 000 in Winchester to inform surrounding counties. W S Hough entomologist at Winchester Laboratory urges orchards to spray for scale this fall. He recommends a strong oil spray or lime sulfur, applied to all tree parts, including outer limbs, after leaves drop but before freezing temperatures.
Commissioner of the Revenue Isaiah Roe returned from Herndon Virginia where his brother Joseph Roe suffered a severe buzz saw accident. His hand touched the revolving saw and one finger was amputated. Infection developed and for a time his condition was serious. He is much improved now.
The tanker Beta suffered a boiler explosion and fire off the New Jersey coast killing three crew and badly burning a fourth. Capt. J B Kesoe suggested a hidden war mine may have caused the blast after surface mines were seen near Barnegat Light earlier. The Beta reached dry dock under coast guard escort with aid from McCall Seminole Hannawa and Ammen.
Persell D. Plank sanitary officer of Winchester left Memorial Hospital after several days of treatment. Earlier he suffered a spinal dislocation at a game and surgeons successfully reset the injury.

A union service will be held on Thanksgiving Day at 10 30 in the Lutheran Church. Rev J Luther Neff of Market Street M E Church will preach. Collections benefit Winchester Memorial Hospital. Mrs Bettie Smith and daughter Annie Smith and Mr Chamblin Steel have returned to Purcellville Virginia after attending the late Mrs May B Wood war eve.

Katherine Conner died November 3 in Memorial Hospital from appendicitis. She was buried at Refuge beside six Sunday school friends acting as flower girls. Pallbearers were her first cousins. The family and community mourn a kind, affectionate friend.
Master Donald Smith eight year old son of Mr and Mrs L C Smith of North Cameron street is slowly recuperating from a badly broken collar bone. He was playing with other children last Wednesday when he fell and sustained the injury.

A morning blaze in Charles Town West Virginia caused nearly 50 000 in damages. The Virginia Barrel Company plant along the Shenandoah Division B&O Railroad suffered major loss with Whitmore Lumber Co and a nearby apple warehouse also damaged. Shepherdstown and Martinsburg aided local fire crews.
BATAVIA Ohio November 1 Jesse Darlington 25 his mother Nancy Darling 55 and baby son Joseph 11 months were burned to death when their farm home near here was destroyed by fire today.

Former Chief Executive Pinchot met with District Attorney Gordon and Neil Burkinshaw as investigators probe a jury tampering case tied to Burns detectives in the Sinclair oil affair. Pinchot's grand jury appearance lasted 12 minutes amid hush from prosecutors and warnings to correspondents. Corroborating disclosures are anticipated as the grand jury nears a possible presentment and indictments in the naval oil lease scandal.
