A formal dedication of a memorial at Avenue and Red Oak Trees is scheduled to follow the Armistice Day parade. Legion officials announced the event and urged community attendance to honor veterans.
National officers of the American Legion Auxiliary and state leaders join Winchester for the sixth Armistice Day observance. Memorial Avenue will be dedicated along with about fifty red oak trees planted by the Auxiliary to honor local war dead. A large reception at Baker’s solicits hospitality for visitors, with an orchestra, refreshments, and formal receiving lines.
Auxiliary and national state officials attend a morning parade to Market Street route 9:30, ending at Handley Stadium for dedicatory exercises. Activities include a football game at Handley, a 5 to 6 pm post tea, refreshment service, and a memorial program with local and visiting legion members.
Miss Lillian L Smith, nineteen, died at 460 North Kent Street from uremic poisoning. Employed at a canning plant last autumn, she fell ill last Friday and convulsed before passing away last evening. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. E W Smith of Bartonsville and six sisters and two brothers. Funeral services at Round Hill Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev T H Daffin, burial at Mt Pleasant Church.
Harry K. Thaw, Pittsburgher and owner of Kenilworth near Stephenson, gifted Emmanuel Reformed Church at Ste hr with an electric lighting system for evening services. The congregation welcomed the modernization, replacing old oil lamps, and neighbors praised the spontaneous generosity.
Funeral services for Clinton C. Herrell a Winchester businessman were held at his South Market street home. The service was led by Rev. B V Switzer with interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Members of Hickory Camp Woodmen of the World and a Friendship Fire Company delegation officiated with a spread of floral tributes and a list of pallbearers.

Reported effort to name a new Winchester postmaster soon after Congress reconvenes on December first. Three leading contenders, Roland C. Ryan John A. Kern and Wilbur E. Cather, have filed petitions and await the president’s nomination and Senate confirmation. John Paul may be asked to advise though a competitive Civil Service exam is planned. The office is first class with receipts well over forty thousand dollars, giving the president leeway on civil service rules.
Retired navy veteran Claude H Ryan answers a sea call once more and joins a coast guard ship. He hopes to sail to join the fleet off Philadelphia and the New Jersey coast to pursue rum smugglers beyond the 12 mile limit.
The Cave family of Kelso Washington lives in a hollow log 22 feet long and eight feet in diameter, fitted as a mobile home with bedroom parlor kitchenette breakfast nook and bath with shower. It sits on a motor truck and has electricity and running water. The Caves previously lived in a tree home.
Handley Schools featured prominently at regional events in Harrisonburg Staunton and Front Royal with staff members presenting talks and exhibits. Edna Kightey spoke at Staunton on What One School Is Doing while Bighmey outlined junior Red Cross work. Duffey Solenberger attended Harrisonburg session on student grouping and program development. Grace Bond spoke at Front Royal on motivation of social sciences and student work was showcased by ninth to eleventh grades. Over twenty Handley faculty attended the Harrisonburg meeting and the school honored a holiday to join the event.

Wide publicity announces $88 sales by Starpaper tomorrow in Winchester merchants plan. The Friday edition will list sections with ads and a big display to draw crowds. Merchants expect strong holiday buying as Winchester stores including The Empire Theatre and several banks and shops promote fair prices and useful gifts.
