EIKTON Virginia November 10 state police report robberies at two Shenandoah county filling stations last October. Seven local men near Harrisonburg were arrested for the Oct 8 Grove Hill station theft and the Oct 26 Toms Brook station robbery. A safe with 8000 dollars in valuables was abandoned near Grove Hill and about 1000 dollars in merchandise was taken at Toms Brook.

Eight month jail term for hitting Winchester officer
Charles H. Mayhew of 310 N. Kent St. received an eight month jail sentence for assaulting a Winchester officer. Judge John Rice suspended four months, with a $25 fine and costs for disorderly conduct. Robert Paul Mayhew, of the same address, was fined $25 and costs for disorderly conduct. Earl Caldwell was released for a prep medical exam but did not appear, also charged with disorderly conduct. The three men were arrested after a disturbance at the Glaize packing house on N. Cameron St where they quit and demanded their pay. Officers Lowery and Hinkins testified Mayhew swung at Lowery with a piece of wood and fell through a conveyor injuring his leg. Mayhew then struck Lowery with handcuffed hands. Lowery, on crutches, may need a cast. Chief J. Thomas Boyd will decide further.
