Election results from Virginia show Senator Harry F. Byrd with a large lead over L. C. Page and major gains for Democrats in multiple districts. District tallies indicate Byrd carrying most Senate votes while Democrats secure several House seats. A note mentions unsafe ditches in Winchester prompting upcoming fixes.
With all twenty one Frederick County precincts reported, unofficial returns show a Democratic majority of 746 over Page and Robertson leading the congressional race by 567 over Will. Voter turnout was light, about half the normal level.
President Roosevelt, upbeat about the national electoral mandate, turns attention to public affairs from Hyde Park. Postmaster General Farley says he is overjoyed by nationwide returns as the White House links to the nation’s problems and heads to Washington tonight. Government leaders expect more normal administration progress after the campaign.
Professor Fernando Martinez a famed Spanish educator and world traveler will speak at the Rotary Club luncheon tomorrow at 1 pm at the George Washington Hotel. He heads the language department at Winchester Extension Institute and has ties to Mary Baldwin College and the University of Virginia.
A morning fire at Hables Palace Theatre caused about 20000 in damage before Winchester Fire Department kept flames in check after more than three hours. Assistant manager Darrill, Triplett, woke to the blaze and alerted crews. Firemen Howard Swartz and Kenneth Cather were slightly injured, and the roof collapsed into a fireproof booth housing equipment. The auditorium, built in 1931, suffered water damage but escaped major harm.
An avalanche of votes propelled James M. Curley Democrat into the Massachusetts governorship and sent David I. Walsh back to the Senate. A Republican slate for minor offices appeared overwhelmed as returns lagged and outcomes remained uncertain.
Republican National Chairman Henry P. Fletcher said the party was licked in the election but need not stay licked. Senator Hastings echoed a similar one sentence remark. The New Deal era was shown to run its course as the crisis continues.
Gov. Albert C. Ritchie leads Harry W. Nice as returns show 163,340 to 146,267 with 9464 precincts reporting. Ritchie strong in Baltimore city and several counties, while Nice leads outside Baltimore. Results remain incomplete and are subject to change.
In Providence New Deal gains sweep Rhode Island races. Felix Herbert loses his Senate seat to Peter G. Gerry by about 35 000 votes. Governor Theodore Francis Green and other Democrats win easily, as do Congressmen Francis B. Condon and John M. OConnell.
An old classified style note advertises Winchester Steam Laundry promising reliable washing and quick turnaround. The brief copy emphasizes a laundry service offering.
Unofficial tabulations across nine precincts show large Democratic margins in Clarke County. Congressman A Willis and Senator Byrd records dominate, with precinct results like 97 to 1 for Page and 96 to 1 for Levi in homes and local races.
In Newark New Jersey Governor Harry Moore Democrat defeats Republican Hamilton Kean by a wide margin as 262 districts remain. Moore tallies 716774 to 515474 with Dill losing to Hoffman by about 10000. In Congress Democrats hold three of ten seats and contend for two more while Republicans win eight of ten.
Frederick County Home Demonstration Clubs observe the annual achievement day at Christ Episcopal Church parish house with all groups represented. An advisory board meeting decided home management as a major project for the coming year and foods as a minor project. Awards from contests held for achievement day were to be announced tomorrow after being given at 3 o'clock.
Shenandoah Valley Dental Association to hold its 22nd annual convention at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester with Dr. C Bruce Harlee presiding. Dr. W A McClure is president elect and Dr. W H Wunder secretary treasurer. Committees include program local arrangements and table clinic with several Winchester and surrounding area dentists. The event spans Thursday evening and Friday, with ongoing deliberations and installations.
Washington November 7 A determined fight for the speakership of the newly elected House formed as candidates who were re elected lined up for the campaign ending at a Democratic caucus before Congress convenes January 3. Leading aspirants include Burns Tennessee Democratic leader Rainey Bankhead Rayburn and Mead with early campaign drives.
The Department of Justice announced Oscar H Robson known as Buster was taken into custody in Phoenix Ariz by authority of the U S Attorney there as the kidnapper of six year old June Robles. A federal complaint seeks extortion charges for letters sent through the mails. Robson 31 of Tucson has ties to a Tucson dance hall.
The Star will not be published on Monday November 12 Armistice Day a national holiday as advised to advertisers and subscribers by The Evening Star.
The city saw a light election with about two thirds of a normal vote. Byrd led the city tally 730 to 153 for Pave, a 577 vote margin, while Robertson carried the House race 694 to 217 over Will. Precinct tallies showed scattered minor votes for minor candidates.
Rush Dew Holt, a 29 year old liberal, wins the U S Senate seat in West Virginia, defeating incumbent Henry D Hatfield as the state votes for Roosevelt New Deal alignment. Holt leads in 1 687 of 2 338 precincts with 282 697 votes to 221 413 for Hatfield, giving West Virginia two Democratic senators with M M Neely already serving.
A large bloc of Republican incumbents loses ground as Democrats surge with widespread New Deal support. Majorities in Congress rise while the GOP also loses several governors. Sinclair fails in California, signaling a historic opposition low.
Washington bulletin reports Democrats leading with nine Senate pickups as returns pour in. New Mexico and North Dakota key for additional gains. Bronson Cutting narrows lead in New Mexico while Carl Hatch leads in the race for the Senate. Wyoming sees Joseph C. O Mahoney defeat Vincent Carter.
