The final hours of the presidential race unfold with rival claims and last minute appeals as Roosevelt and Willkie duel for votes. Roosevelt prepares a nationwide radio address from Hyde Park while Willkie closes with three broadcasts tied to his running mate Senator McNary and CBS NBC and other networks.
The Autumn clean up sponsored by the Women's Civic League of Winchester begins today. Residents may place rubbish on the curb for regular collection during the week. The league promotes a spotless town with the slogan Winchester is a clean town and famed for it. Micky Forney will be missed at The Star office and in park and baseball initiatives.
A radio network spot invites listeners to tune in tonight from 12 to 1. The brief ad promotes nationwide network listening across multiple stations.
Richmond report compares Democratic claim of a 140000 edge with Republican forecasts of a strong showing for Wendell Willkie. Predictions hinge on total 340000 voters in Virginia with key races in the Sixth Seventh Eighth and Ninth Districts and incumbents facing Republican challengers.
Garber, candidate for Congress opposing Mayor A Willis Robertson, addressed a Republican rally at Sarah Zane Hall on Saturday night. He urged four main points against the New Deal and praised Wendell Willkie as a pro business alternative. Local figures C Robinson and W C Demming spoke, with George Baetjer and Walker Bond listed among attendees.
The Rev Dr Hugh W White long a Southern Presbyterian missionary in China died October 28 in Kuling near 69. He is survived by his widow Augusta Graves of Bedford Va two daughters Mrs E L Sanford of Moorestown N J and Mrs A T Dieffenbacker of China now in the U S and two sons H M White of Atlanta Ga and Hugh W White of China. He was a cousin of Rev Dr R Ashlin White and late W Spotswood White. Born in Roanoke he later studied at Washington and Lee Union Theological Seminary Hampden-Sydney and Richmond where he served as a preacher for many years.
Washington reports that about 6,175 local boards will select the first 30,000 men to report between November 18 and December 1 for a year’s Army training. Clarence Dykstra said boards will soon receive master order numbers as the nationwide draft machinery starts its initial operation.
Voter rolls surge with over 60 million Americans eligible to vote in tomorrow’s election as New York and Pennsylvania see large gains. Women compose about 45 percent of New York City’s 3,388,741 registrants, while upstate New York adds 253,226 new voters. Pennsylvania reports 5,022,523 registrations, nearly half the state population.
A collision on the Berryville turnpike between an automobile and a coal truck halted traffic for a time as coal dumped across the road. Two injured were William H. Waddell of Middleburg and 16 year old Ruby Messick of Winchester. The coal truck driver was uninjured. A separate North Market street crash injured Dr. James Davis. A wild ride near Round Hill led to one youth in jail and another hospitalized.

Richmond Nov 4 The ticket for tomorrow includes Hilliard Bernstein the Socialist candidate for the United States Senate and Mrs Alice Burke the Communist candidate for the Senate Senator Byrd heads the Democratic ticket with no Republican opponent While many states ban Communist candidates in Tuesday’s election Byrd is expected to win though a Communist challenger may still appear on ballots in some locales
The notice instructs residents to place all trash at the curb on the usual collection day this week per guidance from the Women’s Civic League. The group is listed with a cryptic code (11-4-1p-21) in the filing.
Democratic leaders in Winchester Frederick county forecast large turnout and clear majorities. W W Glass of Winchester and Erle Edwards of the county report strong support for the Democratic ticket with Frederick expected to favor it by six to seven hundred votes and district candidates Roosevelt Robertson likely to win big.
Funeral services for Frederick W. W. Forney 54 died in his sleep conducted at 4 p m from the Congregational Church. Officiants included Rev. Robert A Whitten Rev W L Dudley and Rev R B Nelson. Interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery. City council Winchester Park team and Elks Lodge among honorary pallbearers.
Judges and clerks in Frederick county precincts must telephone election returns to the Star office immediately after count completion. If no telephone is at the voting place, carry reports to the nearest phone for relay. The Star will reimburse any related expenses. telephone numbers are 32 and 33.
President Roosevelt left Washington for Hyde Park to begin a final five speech tour across the Hudson Valley. He plans an 11:10 p m radio address and a pace similar to 1936 final day, urging all eligible voters to go to the polls tomorrow after meeting with Hull and Welles in the capital. The swing covers New York Pennsylvania and Ohio, home to 109 electoral votes, more than four fifths of the day’s total.
Preparations for the annual Red Cross roll call are underway under Dan Leatherman with aims of 2000 members and $3000. Speakers Bureau members will address civic and luncheon clubs starting Tuesday November 12 outlining local national and international Red Cross work. Speakers include Mrs McSherry Lupton University Women Laurens Jones Civic Club W W Glass Lions Kiwanis and Dan Leatherman Rotary Club.

F N McCormick says the headquarters building will close for the season as cold weather slows tourism.
A Reuters dispatch from Athens dated November 4 reports unofficially that Greek forces have taken the offensive in the southern front over the past 48 hours and are advancing at several points into Albanian territory.
Greek Alpine troops pushed seven miles into Italian-held Albania encircling Koritza and capturing 1,200 Italian prisoners amid heavy fighting in Epirus. British aid to Greece surged, with $80 million in defense funds and RAF bombers hitting Naples and Italian bases while Rome reported limited air gains. Belgrade dispatches note Greek forces crossed Lake Presba at night to strike Italian garrison areas.
Fifty purebred Hereford cattle shipped from Arizona to be placed on the Western ranch recently acquired by a corporation in Fauquier county were unloaded in Winchester. Glen L. Randall of Falls, Va., supervised the unloading and transfer to Fauquier.
