Roosevelt tours critical campaign battlegrounds as Willkie rest follows long 18 000 mile tour. Brooklyn speech accuses GOP of unholy alliance while Hull and Hoover defend democracy and peace in radio addresses. Election eve plans set, Cleveland and New York stopovers highlighted.
Judges and clerks of the election are urged to send the precinct returns to the Star office immediately after tallying. If no telephone is at the polling place, take the reports to the nearest phone and relay them. Star will cover any related expenses. Telephone numbers are 32 and 33.
Mrs. D W Ritenour announces committee members for the Winchester Tuberculosis Association Christmas seal campaign. Bond Sale chairs include Mrs John W Rosenberger and others. Health Program and Posters include Mrs Gertrude Organ and Roy Cather. The drive marks 32 years in Winchester with national TB statistics cited.
Mayor Dr. C. R. Anderson urges citizens to participate in Clean-up Week sponsored by the Wo man s Civic League during the week of November 4. He cites fire prevention sanitation and civic pride as reasons for city wide cooperation led by Mrs. George Snarr and league members assisting to make the movement a success.
In a Brooklyn broadcast, President Roosevelt denounces an unholy alliance of extreme reactionaries and radicals backing the Republican party. He warns patriotic Republicans have not grasped the danger to democracy and cites alleged ties to communism and Nazism.
Wendell L. Willkie charged President Roosevelt with deception over his plan to build 50 000 planes a year and the 12 000 additional planes for Britain. He spoke from his train near New York City criticizing the administration’s handling of wartime production and ally aid beginning an 18 000 mile cross country campaign.
In Madison on November 2 police used tear gas to disperse a University of Wisconsin homecoming crowd estimated at 8,000 on State Street and Capital Square. Over 30 people were detained and released. Demonstrators tried to storm two State Street theatres. Capt. H J Morris warned over a loudspeaker as gas bombs were deployed and more than two dozen shells were fired. Cars were moved into streets and projectiles hurled at officers.
Harrisonburg politician Jacob Garber will headline a Winchester Republicans rally at Sarah Zane Hall on North Loudoun Street opposing Congressman A Willis Robertson for the Seventh District. A Municipal Band concert starts at 7 30 and the address at 8 with C A Robinson presiding and W C Deming of Front Royal also speaking.
Aboard the Willkie train in New Jersey on November 2, Wendell Willkie said President Roosevelt’s Brooklyn address was designed to stir class hatred and divide the people. He condemned the quotation used by Roosevelt as discreditable and tied it to the Philadelphia bar leader.
Francis Adams Henson economist and PR counsel with offices in Washington will lecture in Winchester on What Next In Europe And Asia at the George Washington Hotel 8 p m Thursday under the Winchester Branch AAUW. Henson Yale Columbia educated native of Hagerstown has lectured widely and is known here.

A Berryville Virginia resident Alfred Kerfoot offers a liberal reward for the return of a farm sign. The notice asks the finder to contact the author at the given Berryville location.
Frederick William Forney 54 longtime Winchester Evening Star employee and community leader died in his sleep. A veteran of the Common Council former head of the Winchester Volunteer Fire Department and former Virginia State Fireman's Assocation president. He attended a show with Mrs. Forney and listened to Roosevelt’s Brooklyn address before retiring.
Senator H F Byrd expressed shock and sadness at the sudden death of Fred Forney a longtime newspaper colleague. Forney who dated back nearly forty years in the business was not found until the morning after he failed to appear for breakfast. He was born to Meredith Forney and Catherine Langhammer Forney and married Mary N Patterson on Christmas Day 1910. One son Lester survives.
Mrs Reese Wiley wife and mother of key witnesses in the L C Smith murder trial near Berryville Virginia is recovering from a leg wound after a pistol discharged when knocked from a shelf at her Mt Carmel home. Doctor says the 60 year old is recovering satisfactorily as authorities determine if her wound involved the same weapon tied to the Smallwood case.
The London raid killed several as a bomb hit a crowded bus during a night assault. Spitfires from the southeast coast scattered German formations, shooting down seven raiders by noon and downing five more with anti aircraft help. A bomber crashed near Glascdale killing four crew and another Nazi plane struck an apartment house in Horn.
British RAF raids struck Berlin and Amsterdam late last night, catching civilians in cafes and streets. The Berlin defense batteries fired fiercely, and Amsterdam suffered a damaged military hospital and casualties including German soldiers and Dutch residents.
New York November 2 Charles Healy Day aircraft plant manager with 35 Chinese bombing raids behind him says the Japanese air force is better in number and quality than the United States. He cites 800 to 900 first line Japanese planes in China and argues Americans design on drawing boards surpass actual Japanese service. Healy notes a Japanese pursuit plane he examined traveled 315 mph and was built by the Japanese themselves. Healy previously ran a major wartime plant and sent his factory 700 miles inland during the 1937 Japanese advance to Yunnan province.
Miss Catherine Philips of Philadelphia was treated at Memorial hospital for minor cuts after falling while exiting her car at a filling station near the Front Royal road and Route 50 intersection. She was discharged today.

National draft headquarters releases estimated quotas and credits for each state to determine men local boards must furnish. Virginia lists a gross quota of 28,883 with 5,049 in the National Guard and 24,087 in other forces, yielding a net quota of 9,747.
