In Cordoba Argentina troops patrol the streets after two days of clashes that left six dead and many wounded. The army imposed a dusk to dawn curfew and claimed outsiders orchestrated the unrest amid a general strike that paralyzed Argentina’s auto center.
The James Wood High School baccalaureate will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. on the James Wood athletic field with Rev. Christopher L. Morse of Union Theological Seminary delivering the sermon. Archie J. Governor Rockefeller said on a Latin America tour that he is willing to meet with militant students to discuss grievances and prevent violence. He urged a delegation to engage in meaningful talks while noting violent protests in Quito and Guayaquil and rising tensions in Bolivia.
The first day of the Memorial Day weekend saw road deaths surge to 270, with 11 boating and 70 unrelated drowning fatalities. Safety officials estimate total holiday deaths at 550 to 650, as AP notes higher pace than 1968 and compares to 481 in a nonholiday 78 hour span.
An American owned oil pipeline from Saudi Arabia to Lebanon was blown up in the Israeli held Golan Heights on Friday. A fire burned for hours while flames and smoke rose across the plateau. An automatic shut off halted flow as pipe pressure dropped and the blaze tapered.
At Winchester events Gen. Charles L. Bolte and Rev. Edward M. Garrett Jr paid tribute to the ordinary soldier. Bolte praised front line riflemen while Garrett highlighted veterans as common people who toiled and sacrificed for freedom. The National Cemetery service was hosted by the Winchester Veterans Council with VFW color guard and school band participation.
A Frederick County man, Harry Sirbaugh Jr., 21, of Front Royal, led police on a chase along Rt. 522 after offenses were filed. His 1960 Chevrolet struck a White Post driver and later a southbound car driven by Mrs. Garlene Embrey before veering into a ditch near Opequon Creek. No injuries were reported. The incident halted by police left about $450 damage to Pidney’s car. Continued on Page 2.
Kenneth R. Gregory, an Altus Oklahoma native and U.S. Army sergeant, escaped from Viet Cong captivity after about nine months and was rescued by an American helicopter crew near Tay Ninh City. He arrived at Long Binh's 24th Evacuation Hospital in good condition, having lost ten pounds, and described his first meals back in a mix of fried chicken milk and later a steak meal. Gregory entered the Army in 1964 and had been a prisoner since early detention.

The Western Frederick Bank in Gore was broken into between closing Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday. Only silver coins were stolen from a small main floor safe and a basement door allowed entry. Loss amount undetermined. Investigating agencies include State and Frederick County police and the FBI. Memorial Day closure noted.
Investigators sweep homes in New Canaan for 10-year-old Mary Mount missing four days. Police and divers checked ponds and the park near the Mount home. a loafer was found and a white car seen nearby. Father appeals for public tips. police suspect abductor. Joseph Mount runs IBM centers nationwide and received a phone call claiming Mary was safe with no ransom requested.
Thousands of allied troops backed by tanks and bombers resumed operations across South Vietnam after the Buddha's birthday cease fire. Helicopter gunships hit 14 enemy soldiers 75 miles south of Da Nang. 11 killed. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces conducted ground sweeps and patrols as both sides accused the other of violations. U.S. casualties during the cease fire were 13 killed and 62 wounded. total enemy killed 89.
Senator Edward Kennedy warned critics he would remain against U.S. military action in Vietnam and tied his antiwar stance to the legacies of his brothers John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. He urged graduates to speak up for those whose voices are weak and to live up to past family careers in public service.
Richmond forecast says a warm front will move northward over Virginia Sunday, bringing a slight temperature drop but leaving seasonably warm weather overall.
