Center Denies Utah Anthrax Germ Hazard

Deseret test center commander Brig. Gen. John G. Appel says a Utah ground plot was contaminated with anthrax 15 years ago but poses no hazard to people or animals. Rep. Richard D. Moon has room to park spacecraft on planned lunar landing site

Apollo 10 imagery shows a landing area near the moon’s equator with small craters and a ravine along the east edge. The primary site appears smoother than surrounding terrain though a 12 to 2 mile crater and rille shape loom nearby, with a rougher secondary site pictured for comparison.

NATO Nuclear Guidelines Discussed by Laird Allies

U S Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird and six NATO colleagues began talks in London on guiding principles for using nuclear weapons in Europe to deter a Soviet attack. The study by Britain and West Germany weighed options like a demonstration blast and maritime or land mine use, while Healey urged stronger conventional forces as Canada plans part of its Europe force pullback to two thirds by 1972.

Two amateurWomen golfers Mardell Wilkins and Diane Patterson join the professional tour this summer traveling from California to Shreveport Dallas and Louisville. Viet Cong strategy meeting crushed during Saigon cease fire

U S forces hit an enemy strategy meeting 28 miles northwest of Saigon during a Buddhas birthday cease fire. About 50 Viet Cong were killed, one American dead and seven wounded. U S forces used tanks artillery and air power to seal off the area. Twenty seven AK47s and nine rocket launchers captured.

Father Gerloff Assigned to Sacred Heart

The Rev. Charles W. Gerloff, pastor of Holy Angels Church in Portsmouth, is reassigned to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He succeeds Rev. Philip F. Farrell, moved to St. James in Hopewell. 46 diocesan priests were transferred effective June 7 by Bishop John J. Russell. Gerloff, a Norfolk native, was ordained in 1945.

Nixon Attacks Renewed in Paris Peace Talks

North Vietnam and the Viet Cong renewed attacks at the Paris peace talks, accusing the Nixon administration of intensifying the war. They rejected U.S. plans as fundamentally different from the National Liberation Front proposals and called for unconditional U.S. troop withdrawal.

Convict Escapes From Fishers Hill Detachment

A 26 year old inmate Wade H Ewell of Road Camp 7 escaped a work detail at Fishers Hill near Strasburg yesterday around 130 pm. He is described as Negro 5 ft 8 in 160 lbs, wearing brown prison clothing. Two other Camp 7 inmates Arthur M Newton 18 and Paul J King 19 escaped from a Riverton detail, both at large.
