The Edley school board unanimously chose the district's principal to become the next superintendent, filling the vacancy left by F. E. Clerk. The decision concludes a years long search and positions the applicant to lead district operations and student programs.
Hugh S. Duffey, principal of Winchester High, is unanimously elected superintendent of Handley Schools in Winchester. He will start September 1, 1923 to fill the unexpired term ending July 1, 1925 with an annual salary of 4000 dollars. Duffey is the son of Rev. Dr. J. W. Duffey of Baltimore and trained at Randolph Macon, Columbia, and Harvard.
Prices for Goodyear tires and a help wanted ad for a woman to perform general housework including cooking are listed. The notice appears in a mid city garage classified section and requests replies to F. R. care Star.

AP reports Annie Lee a 56 year old widowed Bowery newsie was found strangled in her two room apartment. Her 15 year old son Willie found her four hours after death and the thief stole $50 and a jewelry trunk key.

The Winchester Base Ball Club held a directors meeting at the Chamber of Commerce chairing by Dr. Yost to plan the opening week. A new baseball park, credit to the city, is ready with Robi Shultz praised for organizing ground leveling and equipment. Opening game vs Strasburg Monday June 4 at 3 30 with a 2 30 gate, season tickets mailed to stockholders, prices 10c children 36c adults 15c grand stand.
The Rotary and Kiwanis clubs meet Friday afternoon at the new park in a likely summer classic. Game time is four o'clock with 50 cent admission including grandstand access and proceeds benefiting the Winchester Baseball Club. Players will be chosen from 40 members, many former stars, promising a solid outing.

Clara Phillips, convicted hat murderess of Alberta Meadows, learned by 11 this morning her request for a new trial was denied yesterday by a Los Angeles court. She stated she would pursue extradition to California and seek a new trial, then head to San Quentin to serve ten years to life.
