Voters in Middletown town may decide in June on issuing bonds to fund a water system sourced from Vaucluse springs and piped to town via an electric plant. Men oppose higher taxes. women reportedly favor the bond issue, amid debate over municipal improvements and progressive aims. Continued on page 7.
A reported 11 foot blacksnake near Martinsburg West Virginia, said to be the longest outside a menagerie, is revealed as two snakes entwined with one swallowing the other. Residents note such cannibalistic attacks among blacksnakes are not uncommon after winter slumber.
Philadelphia City Council passed a unanimous resolution honoring Rear Admiral Louis McCoy Nurton for his service as commandant of the Fourth Naval District and the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The resolution notes his civic contributions and expresses best wishes as he moves to sea duty in the Pacific with the Third Battleship Division.

The Fort Loudoun Seminary baccalaureate was held in the Presbyterian Church with bright Sunday morning skies. Chaplain Evan Walter Scott spoke on Nehemiah I 18, praising leadership, duty, and the courage to rebuild. The service featured Mrs Buckley’s music and notable readings by Miss Whetsoll and Miss McLaughlin.
Charity event at the Auditorium on Tuesday May 29 features an operetta Princess Chan with piano and voice priced 25 cents admission. The Charley Rouss Fire Co. announces arrival of a new Todk and Ladder Truck valued at $9450 and asks for immediate contributions.
National Memorial Day observances will take place in Winchester at the National Cemetery beginning at 2:30 pm. Rev. Frederick J. Mumford will speak, with American Legion posts, Virginia National Guard units, and the Citizens Band participating. The event includes a bugle call, prayers, a Gettysburg address, and a three volley salute with Taps.
Two large cars driven by Herbert Schutte and Stafford Shade collided on a winding narrow curve in Ash Hollow along the Berryville turnpike. Initial reports suggested fatalities, but investigation found no deaths. Both vehicles sustained damage and the cause remains undetermined.

Paris May 29 Italian professor Luc Gallinari uncovers the Cremona varnish formula of the Stradivarius. The discovery claims to expose the red varnish recipe that aided the instrument's famed tone. It notes a long-lost formula reportedly used by masters such as Rembrandt era painters and other old masters.
Joseph S Moffett longtime Baker and Company traveling salesman dies at his sister Mrs B R White home in Strasby after a long illness. He was 62 and a native of near New Market Virginia, previously living in Rome Georgia and Harrisonsburg Virginia. He was a Methodist and active in Masonic circles.

The Mandl High School cadets and Shenandoah Military Academy staged a morning drill at the Winchester fairgrounds drawing the largest crowd yet for the annual contest. Handley High and county guests cheered as both teams displayed precise maneuvers under Captains Hartman and Smith. Guards, applause, and a brief lull marked the tense judging before the Chamber of Commerce officials arrived.
