Government Rules New Jobless Pay Subject to Tax

The Internal Revenue Service ruled that new supplementary unemployment benefits SUB paid by auto makers are taxable income but not wages. The plan, negotiated by the United Auto Workers and Chrysler and General Motors, provides up to 65 percent of take home pay for four weeks and 60 percent for 22 weeks of potential unemployment. More than a million workers in auto and other industries are covered, with several states already barring dual SUB and UC payments.

Revised Farm Bill Deemed More Defensible By Rep Harrison

Rep Burr P Harrison said the revised farm bill signed into law is considerably more defensible than the first, though its true value may be uncertain for months. Gunman Kills Deputy Sheriff Then Strikes Woman During Escape

In Toledo a deputy sheriff, Ray Westover, 35, was fatally shot after stopping a car with three men. John Bowens, 35, of Brooklyn, fled, struck and killed 19 year old Ann Marie Martin who was guiding a blind hospital employee, and was captured after a final roadblock. Suspects Walter Bryant and Phillip Powell, ages 32 and 24, were identified. Bryant and Powell admitted their car had been stolen in New York.

State seeks bids to extend Route 50 divided highway

Richmond area highway plans call for 48 projects the largest bid advertisement in the department history. Bids open at 10 a m June 20 for extend 0.84 mile U S 50 divided highway in Frederick County near Winchester. Eisenhower Signs Farm Law Move To Put Program In Effect

President Eisenhower signs the new farm law amid a drawn out clash with Congress. The measure creates a 1.2 billion dollar soil bank program with funds to be allocated by Secretary Benson this year.
