A Civil War re-enactment recreates the First Battle of Winchester with about 400 participants. Rebels rout Union forces in a Saturday Sunday spectacle as smoke and sabers animate the hillside audience observing the staged clash near town.
Jim Biddle a James Wood High School educator and Co K 5th Virginia Infantry member endured staged deaths at the First Battle of Winchester reenactment, again felled by a shell blast. A loud explosion near 7:25 a.m. startled residents as reports spread from Kernstown to Stephenson. Ed Burch reeled in seven catfish during Shenandoah fishing near Route 7 bridge.
The 75th Army Band of Ft Belvoir Virginia will play at the Memorial Day service at National Cemetery Wednesday at 10 30 a m DST. Rear Adm W J Catlett Jr USN ret will speak with local veterans groups co sponsoring the ceremony.
The 87th commencement at Shenandoah College and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music will honor 36 graduates with bachelor diplomas and certificates. Rev. Donald B. App will deliver the baccalaureate sermon at 11 a.m. and Dr. Clarence J. Hesch will give the commencement address at 3 p.m. Local graduates from Winchester and Front Royal Strasburg areas include multiple named students.

A Suray A public hearing on the proposed dam system for Potomac tributaries including Opequon Creek in Frederick County will be held tonight in the Circuit Court Room. Army Corps of Engineers officials will attend, likely starting about 7 30 p m. The Virginia hearing covers nine dams planned over 15 years with reservoirs at Bloomington Maryland and other sites on the Monocacy, Seneca, Staunton Brooks Gap Opequon Winchester Royal Glen Chambersburg and Conococheague Creek in West Virginia.
Peace officers hunted a man named Gayne Gilbert Smith after five relatives were killed in a Martinsburg area farm. The 24 year old, believed armed with a shotgun, fled into wooded hills near the Lee Moffitt farm, prompting a house to house search and a road patrol by a county posse as authorities linked the slayings to the suspect who drove four cousins to a square dance earlier.
A federal official testified virtually all of Billie Sol Estes grain storage payments totaled for grain stored before the Kennedy administration. Roland Ballou of the Agriculture Department said $7.648 million paid to Estes largely covered pre 1961 storage, with $328,000 in dispute, as hearings on Estes' activities opened.
