Mrs Mullen LaFollette about 50 cut her throat with her husband s razor at their Bean farm home near Rosenberger nine miles west of Winchester while family away. She survived with nine stitches and severe loss of blood and the doctor warned movement could be fatal. Domestic unhappiness and fear of her husband are cited as motive.
Fire in the Bitner Mine of the H. C. Frick Coal Company near Connelsville had burned since November 1922. It was extinguished by soda water highly charged with carbonic acid gas, developed by Mellon Institute scientists led by Dr W A Hamer. The blaze covered over 13 acres and threatened South Connelsville.
Tomorrow at ten o clock the Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South hosts a district meeting for the Lay Activities department. Speakers include G L Morelock Walton New men Melton and Rosenberger with Rev Frank A Tyler presiding. Open forum, morning and afternoon sessions. pastors and delegates from all district churches expected.

At a special city council meeting last night the bids for 200000 water and sewer improvement bonds were rejected and certified checks returned. Hansbrough and Carter offered 192175 or about 96 percent of par, a loss of about 8900. New bids will be sought after about 90 days as market conditions improve.

Empire Theatre confirms a 70 million merger of Goldwyn Cosmopolitan and Distinctive, promising early showings of major titles from Paramount Metro and First National via Goldwyn Cosmopolitan. L. M. Miss Sara Isabelle Ferguson daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Alfred Ferguson of Winchester becomes the bride of Llewellyn Hatchett Stokes of Blackstone Virginia. The ceremony will be at 4 30 PM at the residence of Rev Dr and Mrs Charles D Gilkeson on North Washington Street with a small family and close friends present. The Presbyterian service will be conducted by Dr Gilkeson and a buffet luncheon will follow.
Mayor William W. Glass came home after a several week business tour in West Virginia. Acting mayor W. A. Baker kept the Common Council and police docket in order while he was away. Glass praised the Shenandoah Valley Academy enrollment drive and said business in the state was strong, but he was glad to return to his hometown.
The Virginia Division District Four met at 10 a m in the Handley Library lecture hall with about 60 delegates from northern counties. Miss Ad Yowell presided as district chairwoman as members from towns including Winchester Middleburg and Manassas gathered for a reception at Capt and Mrs Kurtz residence on South Loudoun Street with Confederate and other era displays. Mrs Andrew Jackson Montague of Richmond spoke on supporting the Confederate home for needy women and Winchester residents heard Winchester history from Mrs Ward with humor and local nostalgia.
