Squalus Disaster Remembered 25 Years Later
Gerald McLees recalls the Squalus sinking off Portsmouth New Hampshire on May 23 1939. Thirty three men survived in two compartments and were later rescued as divers raised the submarine later renamed Sailfish. The 1939 tragedy led to a famed salvage and wartime service and is marked by a wreath 15 miles from Portsmouth.
