Senate Naval Appropriations Subcommittee approved a 478 million dollar uplift to the Navy supply bill to cover a 25 000 man enlistment increase. Roosevelt sought 314 million for the Navy in emergency defense plans, with total defense funding reaching 1 464 billion, less than the Army's 1 823 billion.
Winchester urges support for Red Cross war relief as Clarke County exceeds its quota. The upcoming Handley High School concert directed by Dr. L A Richman on May 24 at 2 PM aims to raise funds. community in Winchester and Frederick County is asked to contribute to aid helpless civilians abroad.
The 19th Handlian from Handley High School’s Class of 1940 features 100 pages of photographs and student activities. Reports persist of two Teutonic men detained by FBI in Winchester and Frederick Clarke Warren counties. They allegedly carried a portable radio and a high speed camera with film of a Warren county plant and Reliance area radio aerials. Police deny knowledge of spying claims.
A Petis dispatch says Mme Magda Lupescu, once linked to King Carol of Romania, has arrived in Southern France en route to the United States. The note claims Carol and Lupescu have ended their long romance and that she has been married to Ernest Ardarena u secretary to Carol. Lupescu reportedly avoided a Nazi bid to influence Carol. No arrival date or method to the United States was given.
Washington May 22. Indications that President Roosevelt might draft dollar a year men into the administration emerged as coalition government discussions stirred by Alf Landon’s visit. Roosevelt denied creating a complex defense apparatus and said new appointees would aid existing officials.
Proceeds from the Winchester Frederick Red Cross emergency relief drive total $872, with a $2,000 goal. Edythe Ballard says a Stephens City committee will push the southern county drive, cooperating with local churches to raise funds, still over $1,100 from the quota.

About 500 Winchester housewives attended the opening session of the Winchester Evening Star Cooking School at the Sarah Zane Fire Hall led by Miss Mary Ann Kidd. To accommodate capacity, 100 extra chairs were added as attendance is expected to grow daily through Friday. Gifts of food baskets and prepared samples were awarded to Mrs. Edgar Ambros Mrs. Sam Brown and Mrs. John Bush among others.
Advertisement in this issue calls for sealed bids on municipal armory bonds of Winchester totaling 33000 dollars. Bids must be received by the city treasurer by 3 p.m. on June 19. Bonds issued in 1000 dollar denominations dated May 1 1940 at interest not exceeding 3 percent.

May reports from London Rome New York and Moscow reveal chaos in northern France and German pushes while Rome Berlin pact anniversary is noted. Churchill meets French leaders and returns to London as Radio CBS broadcasts call for French and British women to join armed services. Moscow reiterates openness to trade talks with Britain but rejects any pact undermining ties with Germany.
General Weygand voiced confidence as French forces report repelling a strong German motorized assault near Abbeville. The defense follows losses at Arras and Amiens with Allied units urged to maintain fierce energy and duty.

Cap t Tom Boyd aided the Little Theatre in staging the murder trial drama The Night of January 16 in the Corporation Court Room by special permission of Judge Philip Williams. Karen Andre played by Chi Chi Steck was Not Guilty as a juror panel from the audience returned the verdict.

Miss Ann Preston Starling supervisor of Frederick county Rural Schools announced the third annual music festival to be held Friday at 2 30 in Handley auditorium. A choir will perform as part of the program inviting public attendance.
