All Navy Yards Told To Speed Up Defense Works

Navy establishments were ordered to speed up defense preparations by adding shifts and expanding civilian shipbuilding by at least 15 000 workers within three months. The increase will be spread across eight yards including Portsmouth New York Mare Island Philadelphia Boston Charleston Norfolk and Puget Sound. President Roosevelt summoned top admirals and congressional naval committee leaders to discuss labor law effects on shipbuilding.

Wheeler Named To Head Lions

J. K. Wheeler, comptroller at the O'Sullivan Rubber Company, was elected president of the local Lions Club succeeding Bryan Stotler. Wheeler will be installed June 25 with Patt Barr Marvin D. Weaver Llewellyn Jackson Earl L. Mason Ben Cather and Chet Hobert as officers and D. H. Sencindiver C. F. Schenck William S. Wheatley John G. Over as directors. Wheeler, a Berwick native and 1924 Penn graduate, is married to Wilba S. Hummel of Pine Grove and has ten children in Handley High School. He is active in the Baptist Sunday School and Boy Scout work.

Stephens City Plans Big Pageant and Water Project

Five hundred or more residents will take part in a May 29 pageant to close the school session. The town is digging in for a new water supply, recently buying a fire engine and organizing a fire company with an auxiliary. Students issued The Newtown Pippin, a yearbook praised as fit for a larger institution. Pageant at Stephens City to close 1940 commencement

More than 500 residents will perform in an elaborate pageant at Stephens City High School on Wednesday afternoon May 29 to finale the 1940 commencement. Joist Hite scenes feature William Herrell as Joist Hite and Mrs Rachel Clevenger as Malanie Hite with other pioneer tableaux followed by school activities and campus scenes. The open-air program on the high school campus invites the public to attend.
