Germans reject a treaty proposal presented by Allied powers, risking continued occupation and potential escalation. Officials cite safeguards for national sovereignty and insist on harsher terms being dropped.
The German cabinet through the Associated Press states Germany will not sign the terms as presented at Versailles. European reports note officials seek modifications while negotiations continue. The American Peace Mission reportedly abandoned plans to return soon and Pershing canceled a London trip.
The Chambersburg repository reports the wedding of Miss Ruth Kern Shearer of Montgomery Avenue to Lieut Harold Emory Wright of Cleveland Ohio. The ceremony occurred in Hagerstown performed by a Presbyterian minister. Wright recently returned from overseas service with the 336th tank corps and will be discharged at Camp Meade. The bride is granddaughter of Mrs Adelaide Kern of Middletown and a Penn Hall graduate.
The Winchester Gun Club under president George B. Chapman starts the season with a 5 PM practice shoot tomorrow on the Equity Improvement Company grounds behind the city reservoir. The club, now with about fifty members including twenty new signups, invites the public and returning soldiers to attend as it plans a June 6 all day shooting match for prizes on Confederate Memorial Day in Winchester.
A special meeting of the Central Frederick Farmers Club is scheduled for Thursday night May 22 at 9 p m in the Steph ens City High School. M C Cooper animal husbandman will speak about plans for the Winchester Fair and the Boys Pig Club members are encouraged to attend. County Agent Co BE KOONTZ notes the event and urges broad turnout.
The American Library Association asks gifts of popular fiction to support soldiers in hospitals and camps. Public libraries serve as donation stations led by Leslie D. Kline and C. Vernon Eddy. Favorites include Zane Grey, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Rex Beach, Mark Twain, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Gene Stratton-Porter with broad demand for adventure, detective, and juvenile classics.
Miss Lucy Kurtz, chairman of the refugee garment committee, reports a division heads conference in Washington where Dr. Farrand said refugee clothing cannot meet the enormous need. Since 1918 the Red Cross shipped 25,250,000 yards of material for refugees, but demand outpaces supply. Weights and measures officials of the United States met in Washington for an annual conference the first since 1916. The four day gathering will cover wartime changes and new conditions. Dr. W. S. Stratton, director of the Bureau of Standards, is president of the conference.
The Commerce will announce three new directors to replace three retiring ones not eligible to succeed themselves. Primary ballots opened at 6 o clock at the Secretary A. M. Field’s office and will be counted immediately. The elections committee includes H. R. Bryadly as chairman and J. L. Matis, Barr, Ray Robinson, and C. Ramsburg.
Public school entertainment at Paxton Chapel rescheduled to Tuesday May 27 at 8 30 p m Admission is free and refreshments will be sold.
Hancock Maryland May 19 1919 letter to The Winchester Star from former Eastern Fruit Growers Association president E P Cohill seeks to correct a May 16 report. He states he and his sons own no stock in the Pittsburgh syndicate nor invitations to buy, and will remain among small growers with Tonoloway Orchards intact.

Field of the Chamber of Commerce reports that daily freight service from Baltimore, once restored experimentally, will run to Winchester via Camden station with through cars and no Brunswick transfer. The move aims to speed loading, reduce car congestion, and offer faster delivery nearly at express rates, contingent on sustained local cooperation.
Officials of the American Woolen Company announced a wage increase affecting thousands of operatives in four Lawrence mills. The raise will also apply in the company’s plants in other locations, signaling broader changes for woolen and cotton mill workers.
Six thousand workers at the Merchants' Ship Building Company plant in Harriman Pennsylvania remain on strike as they protest delays in settling labor disputes at the yards. Strikers say neither shipyard officials nor the Emergency Fleet Corporation have taken responsibility for resolving the labor troubles.

The gathering charts include unfurling a service flag for state Red Men who served in World War I, with events at Lee Camp Hall and headquarters at Hotel Richmond.
The hundred and first annual council of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the diocese of Virginia opens at Christ Church. Delegates arrive and stay with locals and hotel guests. Bishop Brown presides for the first time since Bishop Gibson’s death, as the council conducts its business.

Members of the One Hand Sixteenth Infantry including Company I Winchester landed in France at Newport News yesterday and will parade before mustering out at Camp Led. Winchester and Frederick County residents who served in the company met the returning soldiers as crowds swelled Newport News lodging capacities. Most of the original unit who joined in 1917 under Capt. Robert rad are expected back with plans for a brief entertainment program.
