A blaze at the historic Santo hospital in Rome trapped chronic patients after a pavement collapse. By 7:30 a.m. sixteen bodies were recovered and rescuers, including Caribineers and Royal Guards, battled flames. two wards were destroyed while the rest of the building was saved.
Two men on the top deck of a tramcar were shot dead by two assailants as the car neared the city center in a night of firing in the Marrobone district. Police and soldiers faced a chaotic scene as working people hurried to shops amid casualties and a baptism interrupted by the violence.

J W Haymaker, arrested for drunkenness, received $5 fine and $3 costs and $2 for tearing a shirt. Alfred Henry, jailed for drunkenness, paid $2.50 with $3 costs.

Frederick County farmer William Deshon, injured months ago after falling through a haymow, has improved after moving to his son Harry F. Deshon’s home in Johnstown Pennsylvania. His condition is gradual but steady, with no setbacks, and he follows The Star closely via reading. He hoped to read Friday’s parade news and to learn how his old company Friendship fared.
Miss Margaret Brewster's class at Handley Schools held an indoor picnic on Equity Grounds after rain canceled the planned trip to Rouss Spring. Of 33 students, 30 attended, played games for an hour and a half, and enjoyed ice cream cones passed along a single line.

Frost and unusually low temperatures hit the Northwest this week but caused limited fruit damage. The Boise district saw 19 degrees with 22 or 23 recorded in places. White Salmon, Kennewick, and Walla Walla reported varying losses, while Hood River and Vancouver fared better. The Dalles and Wenatchee saw some impact, Yakima spared main fruit areas, and asparagus and berry shipments may be delayed by weeks. The educational board of the Baptist Church released a report showing 26 institutions valued over 26 million dollars with endowment over 300 thousand and enrollments totaling 6 000 women and 13 000 men across fifteen states, a larger educational investment than any other southern denomination.
The Woodrow Wilson Foundation quota of 800 was met earlier and announced by Major B. M. Roszel. Volunteers continue to contribute, with three recent gifts of 1 each from Jerome Wigginton and two unnamed friends, bringing the total to 871.25.

Pinchot’s total rose past 495,000 with Alter around 488,000 as districts continued to report. Women aided in Pinchot victory with organized committees in major cities and statewide campaigning.
Captain C. M. Ellis, in charge of Salvation Army work in Savannah, arrived in town to visit his son Captain E. H. Ellis. He will speak at 8 o clock tonight and again Friday and Sunday nights at the Court House Auditorium. Ellis has 22 years of Army service and wide experience in helping those in need. Everyone is invited.
Albert Reddy McCormick ingested carbolic acid during a domestic dispute at his North Market street home Tuesday evening. His physician reports the prognosis is favorable and he probably will recover fully from the poisoning’s effects.
Paul Tomney and Benton Snider Jr. of Winchester were visitors in the city yesterday and last night. They served on the dance committee for the event held last night in Friddie’s Grill Room, according to the Harrisonburg News-Record.
In Hot Springs Arkansas on May 18 the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South rewrote its Mission Board constitution. The new framework abolishes the secretary’s office and creates three branches: home and foreign missions and women’s work.
