Field notes from Winchester Virginia May 16 1922 recommend using a combination of Spray No 5 and Spray No 6 to control codling moth. Begin spraying May 22 finish May 30 for those unable to cover in three days. Small orchards should spray now and again last three days of May to protect fruit.
Virginia War History Commission asks ex service men who received World War decorations or official recognitions to mail certified copies of their citations to Room 9 State Capitol Richmond. The commission plans to publish the official citation list and urges eligible veterans to ensure their names appear on the honor roll.

The Winchester Commandery No. 12 Knights Templar will hold Ascension day services at 8 o'clock on Sunday May 21 at Christ Episcopal Church. Rev J Lewis Gibbs prelate of Stephenson Commandery No 8 Staunton Va will deliver the sermon and an invitation has been extended to join with Winchester Commandery for the service.
An orchestra arrived this afternoon from Washington to perform at an invitation dance tomorrow evening in Rouss Hall. The event is expected to draw local residents to the hall for a social gathering hosted by community organizers.
Charles Offenbacker, a Winchester recruit, resigned his police post without formal notice, leaving Monday night. Edgar William Settler, calling himself a detective, has temporarily taken Offenbacker’s duties and will undergo a Chief Doran led try-out to remain on the force.
Prof. M B Waite from Washington estimates crop prospects in the Winchester district. York Imperial apples may yield about 60 percent, other varieties around 20 percent, averaging 40 percent for the district after accounting for June drop, frost damage, and typical losses. Observations on May 9 and 10 showed frost injury and bloom conditions affecting final size and set.
Harry Teel, a newcomer, drank moonshine and became loud on the street, then smashed his cell at city jail. Police will arraign him at 7 pm before Magistrate Krebs as damage costs are tallied.

Charlie Chapkin has funny feet but L. Earl Liggan, world champion impersonator of a famous movie star, will perform at Strand Theatre tomorrow night with moving pictures and live appearances. He hails from Virginia and will give away free souvenirs to every attendee. patrons are urged to come early to avoid the rush.
The Rev. Joseph Franklin Morgan, formerly of Norfolk, Va., was installed as pastor of the First Christian Church in Winchester. The service featured greetings from Virginia Valley Central Conference leader Rev. Dr. William T. Walters and readings from several local pastors before Morgan delivered his response and the choir closed with How Firm a Foundation.
Mrs Earl Dodson, who had been staying with her parents Mr and Mrs Hugh Mc Coy on North Kent street, returned today to Washington to assist in nursing her sister in law Mrs William McCoy of Cumberland Maryland who had been visiting and has since gone home.
School children cooperate with the Civic League in a city wide clean-up week set for May 22 through May 27. Volunteers are urged to assist the effort and keep neighborhoods tidy.
A Frederick County advertisement from Hansbrough & Carter promotes a special policy to protect wheat and apple crops from hail damage. It emphasizes hail risk to both apples and wheat and urges growers to insure remaining yields.
Albert H. McCormick a city sewer foreman is in serious condition at his home after swallowing carbolic acid last evening. Dr B B Dutton administered a stomach pump and much of the poison was expelled. he remains conscious and resting this morning as officials note no prior signs of trouble. He told friends of marital difficulties that preyed on his mind and led to the rash act. the acid had been kept in the home for disinfection and about three teaspoons were reportedly consumed.
City children entering kindergarten or first grade may register at John Kerr School for the coming year. Registration runs Saturdays until June 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon starting May 13. Bring birth certificate and proof of vaccination. Children five by Oct 15 may enter kindergarten. those six by Oct 15 may enter first grade.
James B. Cooper, a retired Frederick County farmer, died last Sunday at the Elwell residence on National Avenue. The Star previously misstated his involvement with blacksmithing. he had sold his farm years ago and had since lived in the area.
The Stephenson local of the Farmers' Educational and Cooperative Union organized on May 5 at an enthusiastic meeting. C. C. Clevenger was elected president, L. F. Dorsey vice president, and Roy P. Duvall secretary-treasurer. Meetings set for the second Monday at Kauffman’s and fourth Monday at Rinson’s schools, 8 p.m. Residents may join by applying to the secretary.
Unofficial returns from yesterday’s primary show Gifford Pinchot winning the Republican nomination for governor with a statewide lead and Allegheny County support. Early totals indicate Pinchot over Burke, with results from 5,371 districts signaling a solid margin and Baker’s statement affirming Pinchot as victor.
The Rev. Dr. J. W. Meminger secretary of the ministerial relief board of the United States will address the prayer meeting at Centenary Reformed Church in Harrisville Virginia at 7:45 this evening. He departs tomorrow morning for Harrisville.
