Smalley Wins Democratic Senate Nomination After Ballot Tie

Front Royal area Democrats nominate Berryville businessman Robert W. Smalley for the State Senate after a six ballot convention in which Lewis M. Costello narrowly trailed. A Fauquier vote shift and party unity followed as Costello urged support for Smalley. Smalley pledged a positive campaign and unity for November.

Nixon asks Congress to extend talk period amid rail signalmen strike

President Nixon urged Congress to extend the current contract negotiations with the AFL C IO Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen to July 1 to avert a nationwide rail shutdown. He called on Hodgson to push a voluntary settlement and report by June 21 if needed. The move follows a 13 000 member strike that crippled freight and passenger service across the United States.
