Winchester Woolen Co. offers its Millwood Ave plant for 90000 cash, with a two month period to install carding machines and resume under new management by August 1. The sale excludes receivables and raw stock, leaving a large portion of assets to be claimed by stockholders, while the firm notes a history of 17 years and wartime cloth production.
Mrs. Matthew Ebersole of Winchester and Mrs. Loma Parker of Stephens City were among buyers at the Utz Seller antique sale at Armville Shenandoah County. Parker bought items including a walnut up leaf table for 38 dollars. W F Artrip Jr of Winchester led bidding from 9:30 a m to 1 30 p m. the sale grossed about 5100 dollars. An antique cupboard drew 825 dollars from Daniel Iner of Woodstock.
Richard Petrie a Virginia Woolen Co foreman was elected president of the Shenandoah Valley Textile Executive Assn at a banquet in Sarah Zane hall. New officers include Wintrop Lawrence Skyesville Md first VP Charley Grubbs Martinsburg second VP Holmes Newcome Winchester third VP Clarence Bender Martinsburg treasurer and Herbert Duke Winchester secretary. Newcome oversees shipping at Winchester Woolen Co Duke is Virginia Woolen’s assistant chemist. The new president, Frederick County native, has 15 years at Virginia Woolen and is son of Mrs. Alice C. Petrie and the late R. L. Petrie. He married Lola Brumback. they have three children. SVTEA includes mills in Winchester Virginia Woolen Clearbrook Charlottesville Blue Ridge Chambersburg Dunn Berkeley Martinsburg W. J. Dickey and Son Oella Melville Sykesville Redstone. The group meets to discuss production problems in the textile craft.

Washington May 17 AP Soft coal operators meet to resist higher pay and royalty proposals for miners welfare funds as contract talks with John L Lewis begin. Lewis and UMW officials held a late session but offered no public plan. July 5 is deadline since vacations shift talks. current deal has 40 hour week and $13.05 daily pay with weekly earnings around $75.78 and a $100 vacation payment. Debate over boosting royalty to fund pensions and a possible 40 cent tonnage royalty surfaces. Moody, head of Southern Coal Producers, may join talks after Lewis challenged his right to negotiate.
Roxanne Rogers, 15, North Frederick 4-H, dazzled at Farmers Livestock Exchange stock judging with high individual honors. The Gainesboro High freshman tied for a 1185 pound Shorthorn weight guess, while Edinburg FFA and White Hall 4-H led teams. Prizes totaling cash were funded by Farmers and Merchants National Bank and Producers Credit and Farm Loan.
Senator Olin D. Johnston says he would nominate General Dwight D. Eisenhower for the Democratic presidential nomination if given the chance at the national convention but doubts he will have that privilege. He notes a state higher in alphabet than South Carolina may act first.

Ed Molden and others from the area attended. John Wesley Pearsall was elected president, succeeding Joseph H. Saunders Jr.
A House armed services subcommittee unanimously approved a bill authorizing the Navy to start a 655,000-ton giant aircraft carrier. The ship would be the largest ever built, about half again as big as current carriers, with construction potentially taking up to four years. It could launch multi engine bombers capable of carrying atomic bombs across long distances.
In Salonika Greece police questioned twenty or more Communists about the death of American broadcaster George Polk. His body with a bullet wound was found in the bay off Salonika after he disappeared while seeking an interview with guerrilla leader Mark Vafads. Polk was 34.
The Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Assn plans an Aug 19-21 convention in Williamsport Maryland with a business session memorial service banquet and a fire safety program on day two and a parade prize list to be announced. John Boyd heads the executive committee with Bernard Groves attending. Governors from four states will attend a June planning meeting in Martinsburg to coordinate demonstrations and addresses. Fire Chief Bill Musey leads the CVVFA committee and manufacturers may provide demonstrations. Public officials executives and safety engineers will be invited to the second day.
A grand jury charged Mrs Louise Burke 43 Star Tennery with murder in the April 21 shooting of ex soldier Paul Berry 25. Burke pleaded not guilty and was jailed. Judge Elliott Marshall set May 27 for trial before a felony jury. Witness Katie Lee Jenkins testified. Also a true bill was found against William Miller for a residential burglary near Middletown May 4 with valuables valued above 50 dollars. Trial dates for other cases were scheduled.
The second report meeting on results of the Winchester Memorial Hospital campaign for an $850000 building fund is set for tonight at the George Washington hotel. Campaign chairman J Pink Ney Arthur will preside and urges full town and outlying-area participation with reports from each team.

Officials of three brotherhoods that called the strike will meet railroad representatives at 9 a.m. in the Statler, in an effort to ease government seizure and return control to private management.
Five people were killed and a sixth fatally injured when a car was struck by the Powhatan Arrow east of Ivor. Officials said the crossing had wig-wag signals operating at the time.
The Winchester tri breed sale averaged 319.72 with total 17,265 for 54 Aberdeen Angus Hereford and Shorthorn cattle including 18 bulls and 36 cows and heifers. Top Angus bull sold for 850, while top cow and calf brought 550. Hereford and Shorthorn champions sold for 500 and 375 respectively. Buyers included Virginia and nearby states. judges and auctioneer noted record crowds.
