German naval forces press into the Baltic with a powerful fleet move. Reports describe fleet strength and strategic aims in the Baltic region as tensions rise among opposing fleets.
French and German forces clash along the Verdun front with artillery bombardment near Avecourt and Hill 304 j and feeble Meuse bank attacks repulsed. In the Baltic, the German fleet, including the Hindenburg, is sighted near Gothenburg while Russians advance into Turkish Asia, driving toward the Baghdad railway and forcing Evandus retreat.

Messrs. R. T. Barton, Robert M. Ward and R. Gray Williams left this afternoon for Warrisonburg Virginia to represent clients in cases during the Mey tear ef the Cimunt Costs of Rockingham county now in progress. Mr. William E. Cooper departed this morning on a business trip of several days to the northern cities.
Charles Grim was jailed after a town incident involving a horse owned by William Craig of White Post Clarke County. Grim claimed to have bought the outfit and was held for a Wednesday hearing before Justice Krebs on cruelty to animals charges. The horse was found stiff and injured after a night-time runabout disappearance and collision, with the animal later placed in pasture care.
In Waukebgan Illinois on May 16 three jurors were tentatively chosen for the trial of Will Orpet accused of Marian Lambert's murder. The court drew large crowds as the state prepared to seek the death penalty. Of 116 summonses only 78 jurors remained after farmers claimed crop duties and were excused.

Richmond May 16 It appears a major error may exist in recent prohibition legislation as Virginians could legally stock wine cellars before Virginia goes dry on November 1 1916 Large liquor firms seek official opinions from Attorney General Pollard and Prohibition Commissioner designates but answers are not being given. Farmers urged to deliver wheat now for highest market price paid in spot cash at the mill. I W Dick, Superintendent, announces start in about ten days and invites calls at once.
The Democratic Congressional Committee for the Seventh District orders a primary election on August 1, 1916, to select a member of Congress from the Seventh District.
Roxie Rhinehart, nine, attempted to give her two year old brother Mark a bottle she believed to be bagrum. The bottle contained carbolic acid and left Mark with head blisters though doctors expect no serious outcome. The Maxwell Distributor delivered several vehicles to local firms including Bly and Funkhouser in Strasburg and Beck's Best Bakery in the city.

Revised estimates show the regular peace strength at 211000 officers and enlisted men and the national guard peaking at 457000, yielding a total of 668000 troops on a peace basis, up from just over 200000.
The Little Mountain Methodist Episcopal Church near Greenspring will be dedicated on Sunday May 21 with services at 1030 in the morning and 230 in the afternoon. Rev Dr B F Devries will preach the dedicatory sermon. The rebuilt church stands on the site of the old building destroyed by fire two years ago after 136 years of service.
Plain clothes officers under Mayor Ward nabbed three more speeders Alva Richard William Forney and Harley Sells. They face police court tomorrow for violating the speed ordinance each fined 11 50. Chief Doran confirms enforcement of the cut out law with no further cut outs reported.
Mr. J. H. Kent from Millwood Clarke county reports his mother Mrs. Joseph H. Kent, now seventy six, has second eyesight and needs no glasses as she reads fine print and threads a needle. She is widow of Joseph H. Kent who died years ago at Upperville Loudoun VA and will be seventy six on June 16. Mrs D C Randolph is visiting her father Thomas K Cartmell at Mrs H H Baker residence on South Washington street.
Mr. Charles P. Kremer's two small stables and a shed behind his South Kent street home were destroyed by a Sunday afternoon fire. Insurance is only 75 dollars with a total loss around 300. Firemen from Winchester prevented spread to nearby inflammable structures and halted a potential gas company explosion risk.
The $50,000 alienation suit of Darreta Turner against Adolf Hachmeister, agent of the Hamburg American line, was settled today for $800. Turner, partly paralyzed, could not appear. Mrs Turner is 56. Her husband formerly clerk of the court in Baltimore now resides there.
Dr George H Carpenter a well known retired physician with many friends in Winchester and nearby counties returned from Atlanta where he spent the winter and spring in better health until a relapse at Cumberland Md He has since shown marked improvement and friends hope he will soon resume hunting and fishing activities John Oxter also has many friends hoping for his speedy recovery.

Funeral services for Miss Henrietta Price, a longtime Win Memorial Hospital figure and schoolteacher, were held at the Presbyterian Church after a brief illness from pneumonia. Rev. Dr. J. H. Lacy led the simple service, with hymns, floral tributes, and children of Price’s school surrounding the graveside at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Present were her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Price of Charlottesville. Pallbearers included B. Sheets, L. C. Janney, M. M. Lynch, Harry R. Kern, Fred S. Boyd, and William B. Wagner.
John McCarthy, credited with locating the boat that ferried Sir Roger Casement and Daniel J. Dailey from the German submarine 49, testified as the first witness on day two of Casement's high treason trial in London. Large crowds packed the courtroom and awaited outside.

At the close of Baltimore wholesale markets No 2 red wheat was 1 16 1 2 per bushel and corn 53 1 2 cents. Dr and Mrs Lewis M Allen of Clifton near Gaylord Clarke County Va motored to the city this morning and spent the day with friends.
