In Carpers alley a county magistrate court heard Newlin vs Nolan over a horse and dog sold for 30 dollars. Judge Tavenner ruled the horse lacked working ability, finding misrepresentation and awarding 40 dollars plus costs before Nolan appealed to the Circuit Court.
Empire advertises a $100 reward for information about other U.S. theatres that have shown six new big feature pictures in one week. It promotes Fury with Barthel Mess and Gish as top attractions at low prices, noting each winner plays only one day. Also invites a good typewriter desk for sale at the Star Office.
Winchester longtime citizen James C Ritter dies at 4 35 PM Sunday at his Millwood Avenue home after heart trouble and dropsy. He was 66 or 67, worked at Shryock's gardens, member of Friendship Fire Co and Grace Lutheran Bible class. Survived by widow Virginia B Peery and three sons Linden Clinton Mich Burton and Holmes Ritter, plus three brothers. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 PM at family residence with Rev George W Stover officiating. burial Mount Hebron. Pallbearers named Carper Womeldorph Bowman Rosenberger OLeary Grim.
A burning brush pile near the Old Dominion Paper Company's plant threatened the site about 1115 PM Saturday. The Friendship Company fought the fire that spread to a paste house, while hundreds of autos jammed roadways hindering fire trucks and a sprained knee sidelined Captain Fred W Forney in directing the effort.
The community mourns Arthur D. Henning a longtime merchant farmer and horticulturist. He joined Denny Brothers as a boy and later ran a Stevens City apple orchard. Married June 16 1892 to Mary Carter he left two daughters Mary Louise Henning and Mrs E B Lowry. Funeral at 3 pm from South Stewart Street conducted by Rev Charles Adey with Mt Hebron Cemetery burial.
J R Dushane announces Spray No 5 starts Wednesday May 16 as part of the apple spray program. The spray targets scab and codling moth after rain dispersal and emphasizes five quarts lime sulfur to 50 gallons water with one pound lead arsenate. Testing and dilution per table advised. Frederick County Fruit Growers Association.

A car driven by Alonzo Parson on South Market Street swerved to avoid a collision with a vehicle driven by Rev. C. W. Tinsman of Dayton Virginia. Two children, Emma McFarland 16 and Helen Cave 4, were injured and taken to doctors. neither serious. Tinsman expressed remorse and offered to cover expenses.
Edgar Marpole, a noted lumberman, was fined 10.25 in county court after pleading guilty to polluting Hogue Creek by discharging sawdust from his nearby mill. He claimed ignorance of the law and promised to move the mill to prevent future pollution, marking Frederick County's first such prosecution.
Joseph S. Patterson rushed to Paw Paw Virginia after a telegram stated his brother Walter Patterson was in a dying condition. Walter had been injured internally in a railroad accident and is not expected to live through the day. Also at the bedside were their 97 year old father Charles L. Patterson of Cacapon West Virginia and other relatives.

Winchester High School baseball handed its second defeat of the season at Chambersburg 3 to 2. Hartzell pitched two long doubles for Chambersburg, while Snyder pitched well for Winchester but received little run support. The setback sharpens the upcoming S. V. A. game at Equity diamond, where S. V. A. seeks to remain undefeated and may claim the league title.

Robert Santmyer of southeastern county was treated at Memorial Hospital for numerous cuts after his seven passenger Packard touring car collided head on with a three ton sand laden truck owned by James L. Gardner of Frederick County. Santmyer’s brother escaped injury. the truck driver Charles Brill was unhurt. No bones were broken and Santmyer was expected to be discharged in a day or two. The crash occurred just over a hill south of Stephens City, neighbors suspect the car accelerator was pressed by mistake.
Jas R Griffin owner of a Petersburgh bathing resort was found handcuffed and ill in a gravel pit. He said bootleggers kidnapped him a week earlier and set him adrift in a boat on the Appomattox River before he walked exhausted to safety.
About twenty members of Winchester Commandery No 12 Knights Templar drove to Charles Town West Virginia last evening for Ascension Day services by Potomac Commandery at Zion Protestant Episcopal Church. The Rev Conrad H Goodwin rector of the church delivered the sermon by the Rev Robert B Nelson rector of Christ Church in this city. A large mixed choir provided music and afterwards Templars and choir members attended the Potomac Commandery asylum where refreshments were served.
The Winchester Common Council plans to repeal the jitney regulation ordinance at the next meeting. Several members are unhappy with license procedures and intend to draft a new covering rule. The process would start with repealing the current ordinance and refunding licenses, followed by passage of a fresh measure.
