President Ford declares Michigan victory essential for his Republican bid and calls for a home-state mandate as Ronald Reagan intensifies campaigning in Kalamazoo tonight to take over the state GOP stage.
Virginia Attorney General Andrew Miller abandoned neutrality to endorse Jimmy Carter for the Democratic presidential nomination and urged Virginia Democrats to follow. He argued Carter can unite the party and defeat the Republican nominee, predicting Carter could secure a strong first ballot delegation at the national convention. Carter heads to the United Nations in New York for a policy speech as Ford campaigns in Michigan and elsewhere amid a tightening primary race.
Frederick County supervisors reappointed S Roger Koontz to the Sanitation Authority as liaison between the board and authority and passed a resolution of appreciation for his service. Marcus M Adams was named to the authority, filling Koontz’s seat. The meeting covered funding for the Redbud Run Abrams Creek project, a music festival permit, and three rezoning requests in Gainesboro and Shawnee districts. May 21 road viewing committee set. judge Woltz called one request moot.
The U S Embassy urges Americans to avoid travel in Rhodesia amid unsettled conditions and warns those there to exercise extreme caution and plan to leave if the situation worsens. About 150 junior ANC exiled militants were arrested in Salisbury as the guerrilla war against white minority rule intensifies.
At United Nations New York Jimmy Carter calls for a voluntary worldwide moratorium on purchase and sale of enrichment and reprocessing facilities to curb spread of peaceful nuclear power. He links dangers to weapons material and urges international action and a world energy agency.
Winchester City Manager Wendell Seldon will receive the Virginia Public Administrator of the Year Award in Richmond tonight. Seldon has led Winchester since 1967 after 20 years as assistant to the City Manager. The award, given by the Virginia chapter of the American Society for Public Administration, honors high ideals of public service.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors approved its budget and heard arguments from opposing sides over a private water and sewer firm. Additional stories and photos appear on the Area News page. Olympic Equestrian team trials will be held June 11 and 12 at Walnut Hill Farm in Boyce.
