Winchester faces a looming tax hike as city budget pressures grow. City Manager Wendell Seldon notes rising costs and loss of state and federal funds may force higher taxes next year, with a June public hearing on the budget.
The right wing Christian factions renew attacks around Beirut while Moslem and Christian forces trade heavy shelling across the buffer zone. Reports say 106 killed and 176 wounded in 24 hours as the 13 month conflict continues.
A 19 ton anhydrous ammonia tanker slid off an overpass on the Southwest Freeway in Houston and exploded, creating a toxic white cloud that trapped drivers and forced evacuations. Four people died and about 200 were injured, with 68 still hospitalized and seven in critical condition. Investigations by the Air Control Board and NTSB were announced, with witnesses saying the truck failed to negotiate a curve before the plunge. Names of the deceased include William Gregory Schmidt and others from Conroe Sugar Land Corpus Christi and Houston.
Reagan won Nebraska with 54 percent as Ford took West Virginia by 56 percent. Church upset Carter in Nebraska, while Byrd dominated West Virginia. Carter led Connecticut’s primary but Udall and Jackson held gains elsewhere. and Ford faced notes of crossovers and Morton blamed Nebraska losses on the domino effect.
In Nebraska Senator Frank Church defeats Jimmy Carter amid ABC sentiment. The win hinges on labor liberal support and Church’s appeal as a Democrat who can unite factions. Carter faces tougher contests ahead as Brown and Church loom in upcoming primaries.
City residents may avoid tax increases but sewer rates are expected to rise. Berryville City Council discussed this issue on page 21. Winchester City Council addressed a leasing problem at the Municipal Airport and other items on page 21.
