Two men charged with the criminal assault of a 25 year old Clarke County woman pleaded before Clarke Circuit Court. John S. Lichliter 26 has a July 2 hearing set and Kenneth Brill 27 will have a hearing after Lichliter. The alleged assault occurred the night of March 28 near her home east of Berryville. She was taken to the hospital by the John H Enders Rescue. The maximum penalty for criminal assault is death and the minimum is five years in the State Penitentiary.
A city committee appointed last month to study a proposed fieldhouse in the city park meets tonight at 7 30 at the War Memorial Building. City Councilman J Ben Cather chairs the 15 member panel consisting of city recreation department staff.
A delegation of more than 25 people led by Dr and Mrs Hart mut Doerwaldt of Stephens City urged the county board of supervisors to pass an anti rabies ordinance requiring dog owners to have their animals vaccinated before licensing. The meeting echoed a similar push seven months earlier and followed a public hearing where residents voted on the issue.

Frederick County records the year’s first traffic fatality in a one car crash on Route 277 east of Stephens City. Harry St. Clair Jarrels, 87, of Bridgewater, was the driver. His car left the road, hit an embankment and was a total loss. His brother Robert Jarrels of Bridgewater was treated and released at Memorial Hospital.

Federal forces massed in Alabama as a precaution after rioting in Birmingham. Police reported quiet by morning with more than a thousand officers under martial law. About 50 people, including officers, were injured as the violence spanned parts of the city. President Kennedy ordered Army troops to restore order and enforce federal voter registration records.
