Eckener Defends Hindenburg Flight Plans From Lakehurst Critics
Aboard the Zeppelin Hindenburg en route to Germany on May 12 Dr. Mago Eckener challenged critics of Lakehurst arrangements. He praised U S aid and weather plans, predicted a 40 hour crossing to the channel, and noted decisions on detours near Nova Scotia as the dirigible neared its northern course. Captain Lehman said he was overwhelmed by hospitality at Lakehurst and Washington. The craft’s position placed it about 1,605 miles east of New York City with eastward travel averaging around 60 mph.
