Tax Bill Rewrite Prompts New Revenue Proposals
Secretary Wallace presented fresh tax recommendations to the Senate finance committee as indications grew that the House revenue bill would be drastically revised. President Roosevelt reportedly told Chairman Harrison Congress must set the tax methods to ensure permanent revenue of 620 million and 500 million from temporary levies. The committee reopened public hearings to hear Wallace propose new processing taxes to raise 220.6 million and to enact the 80 cent windfall tax on refund processing. A pending repeal of certain AAA provisions and reenactment of others was noted, along with a suggestion from Jesse H. Jones for concessions on taxes on undistributed profits used for plant investments.
