Episcopalians Propose Marriage Certificate and Waiting Period

At the 144th annual council of the Episcopal diocese of Virginia in Charlottesville on May 11, a pair of resolutions were presented. One calls the legislature to require a certificate proving freedom from communicable diseases before issuing marriage licenses. the other urges harmonizing Virginia law with surrounding states on notification and waiting periods for license applicants. The measures were from the Board of Christian Social Service led by Rev. R. B. Nelson of Winchester. Two Richmond clergy, Rev. L. Carter Harrison and Rev. R. Cary Montague, were nominated as clerical deputy to the provincial synod. A resolution to extend the committee on the proposed canon fixing a rector’s tenure was adopted. The next meeting location was set for Orange.
