Hydrangea care: pruning and growing tips
Many complaints over recent years about small hydrangea blooms may stem from drought. Hydrangeas need ample water and rich soil, thrive in sun or light shade, and respond to heavy pruning to produce large flower heads. Prune in fall or spring to three or four buds per stem, stronger shoots kept, weaker cut away, with more severe cuts for open sun varieties. French hydrangeas are an exception.
