Rescue teams say they are within about 600 feet of the trapped miners at Hominy Falls West Virginia as water recedes. Fifteen of the twenty five miners remain alive but ten deeper in the mine are presumed dead.
Washington AP conferees endorsed Johnsons 10 percent income tax surcharge tied to a 6 billion dollar spending cut. The plan covers individuals and corporations, lasting 15 to 18 months, with exemptions for Vietnam War funds Social Security veterans and interest. Senate language includes federal employee rollbacks and 10 billion in new cuts for 1969. House pushed a 13.67 billion HUD bill with 4.5 billion total cuts this year.
Former Lexington Municipal Court Judge William M. Romans Jr. receives 34 years on 17 counts of fraud and forgery after pleading guilty. Judge Glyn R. Frederick County Sanitation Authority announces it has surpassed the minimum contract threshold for a Dye Wea Villa water and sewer system.
