In Saigon heavy fighting continues for a fourth day as 2,002 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers are reported killed in three days of combat. A 24 hour curfew is in place in western Saigon. Allied casualties total 1,142 with civilians and refugees bearing significant losses. U.S. forces use helicopter gunships and bombers to strike western edge positions.
A six member U S delegation led by Averell Harriman heads to Paris for peace negotiations with Hanoi as Hanoi's team arrives. In Washington officials warn that high North Vietnamese troop movements could provoke U S retaliation despite the approach of preliminary talks. Ha Van Lao comments were cautious about prospects.
The Red Cross needs 10 pints of AB negative blood for open heart surgery on May 21 the next Bloodmobile visit. Only 18 donors with that type are known locally. AB negative donors should call the Red Cross office to make appointments. Searts Summer Sale catalog and a local pizza shop ad follow.
Dr Clarence Hill of the Winchester Fruit Laboratory calls frost damage to apples in the northern Shenandoah Valley considerable and warns of a possible 2 10 percent drop in crop volume. A large grower notes varying losses by location. Frost struck after blooming, with temperatures down to 20 degrees and mid 20s readings. Forecasts show 50 to 55 degrees tonight, showers tomorrow, and below normal temps with more rain through the weekend.
Ten pumps drawing 3200 gallons per minute aided rescue efforts for 15 miners believed alive in a flooded Hominy Falls coal mine. Two foremen farther in and a vent shaft were relieved by air and supplies as 40 other miners remained unaccounted near the wall break.
In Paris police battled student demonstrators in clashes surrounding the Sorbonne as 10 000 to 20 000 protesters surged through the city. The government signaled readiness to adapt university education while vowing to maintain public order amid ongoing actions led by the New Left.
Pope Paul VI announced a two to three day trip to Colombia in August to attend the 38th International Eucharistic Congress in Bogota and to open a Latin American bishops conference in Medellin. It would be the longest journey of his 70 year reign and his first to Latin America.
Joseph Lee Bageant Jr., 21, of 4 Peyton St., charged with possession and sale of marijuana, will be presented to a Corporation Court grand jury after a preliminary hearing. 370 milligrams of marijuana were found in a bottle analyzed for the Commonwealth. State Police Investigator J E Hall and Edwin A Bayliss testified regarding the evidence and incidents leading to the case.
The Peanut Cellar hosts Wednesday night authentic Dixieland jazz at 8:30 PM. Local musicians perform as patrons enjoy a classic jazz evening.
R L Rider Company of Warrenton submitted the low bid of 359 861 15 for excavation pavement drainage seeding mulching and installation of runway lights and beacon for the Winchester Municipal Airport project. Six bids were opened with totals ranging up to 438 654 50, Bourne and Associates estimated 418 592 50 for the improvements. Plans call for a 100 by 4500 foot runway with taxiways lighting wind indicators and a segmented circle vault while the existing runway becomes a taxiway. The project includes land costs and engineering.
In Washington Kennedy defeats Humphrey to capture the District of Columbia 23 vote delegation. Kennedy supporters also win national committeeman and committeewoman races amid party control contests. Republicans back Nixon slate led by Rockefeller. Balloting delayed by lengthy paper ballots.
