The Belgian relief steamer Haden reached port today, having been attacked off the Dutch coast on March 17 with seven lives lost. The ship carried papers from German authorities guaranteeing safe passage, yet a German submarine fired more than forty shells before the commander said it was a mistake.
An air raid by a German airman hit London early today. Four bombs fell in the northeastern section, killing one man and wounding a woman. Property damage was slight. official notice released by the press bureau.
Company A of the National Defense League will meet at 8 o clock this evening at their armory for the regular drill session.
Mrs Elizabeth A Fankhouser died at Middletown and left a will claiming 5000 to 7000 dollars, yet the appraised estate totals only 13 50 in cash and a bed clothing and trunk. Executors filed the appraisal in Frederick County Circuit Court. The will also provided a monument fund and legacies to relatives.
At the Winchester Presbytery meeting in Moorefield West Virginia Elder J Henry Moling of the Winchester church urged churches to provide a proportional salary increase for pastors amid higher living costs. Commissioners chosen to represent the Presbytery at the General Assembly in Birmingham Alabama on May 17 include Revs H M Moffet and M A Ray and Elders Denny and Moling.
Patrick Ready aged 60 was shot four times by a guard on duty at the Girard Avenue bridge and died early today. The sentry's name remains confidential while investigators probe why the warning to halt was ignored.
Henry S. Baker Jr. of Winchester, a Washington and Lee University student, earns a new scholarship honor by selection into Omicron Delta Kappa Society. Only ten of the 500 students are chosen each year.
EK E Farr, long time office manager of the Jefferson Cooperage Company in Ranson, will relocate with his family to Winchester to assume general management of the Winchester Cooperage Company. The Charlestown Advocate praises him as an excellent citizen and first class business man.
Apples have fallen in price over the last sixty days with Ben Davis apples down nearly one ace per barrel compared to January. Market observers note apples as the sole commodity showing a price decrease in this period.
Crowded conditions at Winchester's jail stretch resources after a long period without prisoners. Jailor Armel doubled up inmates, rushed food orders, and extended furnace use to accommodate all boarders. Many inmates are short-term or awaiting trial, with bail set for others, while high food prices affect the jailer’s duties and compensation.
W. T. Birmingham of Winchester brought home the remains of his mother and sister from Green Hill Cemetery and reinterred them in Winchester. He sold his lot in Green Hill Cemetery to Charles Brubaker.

Three men were arrested and jailed after sounds of two plots to damage railroad property surfaced in Rockingham county. A dynamite stick fragment was found in coal at the Elkton Norfolk and Western station while three men were found trespassing on the Baltimore and Ohio bridge near Cave Station and Mount Crawford. Officials offered no comment on the Elkton dynamite discovery. The trespassers faced fines for trespassing and were sent to Staunton jail when unable to pay. The trio had ridden the Shenandoah Special to Harrisonburg the prior week.
Washington May 2 1917 Dr FE Houston secretary advises Frederick county Va farmers to focus on staple crops like corn oats peas and potatoes. Recommend expanded acreage and extended cultivation with guidance from Department of Agriculture and Virginia Agricultural College extension at Blacksburg to boost production and secure better prices.
Private Willey of Winchester, about 25, of Company I, Second Virginia Regiment, was accidentally shot in the forefoot during a friendly tussle for a revolver at Little Line trestle south of Stanley. He was taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital and is reported doing well with no danger of being crippled. Guards from the Winchester company continue to man trestles and outposts along the line under Captain Conrad at Riverton.
Airmen Peter Merrick of Roosevelt and John Stender of Tonawanda were killed when their airplane exploded in mid air at Hempstead Plains flying field. The aircraft fell about 2000 feet likely due to gasoline ignition.
The House began debate on a bill to authorize the President to seize into federal possession all ships from nations at war with the United States that are interned in American ports. A navy board would survey and appraise the vessels already held, with a formal law to cover the seizure.
At the close of the Baltimore wholesale market the day’s big session shows spot wheat at 3.07 and corn at 1.70 1/4 dollars. Local dealers post 3.07 for wheat after the market’s close.

It was stated this afternoon that Mrs Chrismore has withdrawn her divorce suit against husband Clinton FE Chrimore, builder of the city. The case had not yet been bill in Corporation Court when withdrawn at the plaintiff's request following reconciliation of differences.

Mrs. J. F. Schlack widow of a Ridgeway man died at her son’s home after a brief illness. Born Mary Wood in 1827 she lived 90 years and was long active in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Survived by three sons Charles George and John Schlack. three daughters Belle Sonseney Mrs Iverhart and Mrs Pine. 23 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral at Paynes Chapel with Rev W T Handesty officiating. Burial in nearby churchyard.
Washington May 7 The Treasury advanced another 25 million dollars to Great Britain. It is learned that by month end an additional 50 million will be handed over. Funds are expected to run at about 100 million per month until war bond proceeds arrive.

An explosion partly wrecked the Federal Dyestuff and Chemical Company plant near Kingsport Tennessee, about 26 miles from Bristol. One man Parker of Georgia was killed and several injured. Initial reports claimed 26 injured. Company officials are reticent and officials conduct an investigation amid rumors of possible alien enemy involvement.
The funeral of Mrs Elizabeth C Ewing who died at Stephens City last Thursday was held Friday with interment at Friendship Chapel. She was in her 60s and widow of Robert W Ewing. She leaves a daughter Miss Katewing and three grandchildren, children of the late Rev W C Ewing of Williamsport Md. An unrelated local ad promotes fruit trees at old prices with discounts and grafting offers.
Washington May 7 Naval officials report limited progress in war preparedness with the German submarine menace rising. Navy advances are cautious and no official Saunders breakthrough is announced, while plans for an American expedition to France near August are under study.
Clarke County Choral Club presents a musical at White Post in aid of Meade Memorial Church Organ Fund. The Parish House event takes place Thursday May 10 at 8 30 p m with admission 25 cents.
Washington dispatch reports ex Premier Viviani and six Maryland delegation members invited to visit Baltimore during their mission to the United States. Senator Smith and Senator France were among those asked, with Mary Lansing handling the invitation.
Telegram from Kentucky confirms the death of T. R. Cobourn, eldest brother of Mrs. James P. Kremer and brother of Mrs. Isaac T. Baker. Mr. B. Campbell from Prairie Grove, Ark., has telegrammed he is at his home in Opequon.
