In Belfast the Rev Ian Paisley led the United Unionist Action Council in a four day old strike. He said the strike will go on as workers weighed joining the stoppage amid dwindling support and tension in the province.
Martinsburg police report no leads in the stabbing death of James L. Payne 30 a longtime Journal employee found slain in his Stoney Court apartment at 1604 Winchester Ave. Payne suffered three chest stab wounds with autopsy pending and time of death undetermined.
The U S unemployment rate falls to 7 percent in April, the lowest in 29 months, with total employment rising by 548000 to about 90 million. Unemployment declines across most groups as the civilian labor force grows to 96.7 million and earnings rise modestly.
President Carter arrived in Newcastle amid cheering crowds and flags, then planned a brief drive to Old Washington to view the ancestral manor and plant a tulip poplar tree from Mount Vernon. He touted aims to spur employment, curb inflation, and aid less fortunate nations.
Foreign Minister R F Botha indicated it may be inconvenient to receive U N Ambassador Andrew Young in South Africa later this month amid reports he would meet black leaders. Aides added the door had not been closed and Young would speak to businessmen after a U N meeting in Mozambique.
