Railroads and highways funnel crowds into the city for the third annual celebration attracting about 50,000 visitors from Virginia and nearby states. The event showcased regional transportation access and community attractions.
The third Shenandoah Valley Apple Blossom Festival climaxed in a grand parade and pageant at the Winchester fairgrounds drawing over 50 000 visitors. Governor Harry Byrd led remarks as multistate crowds filled Main Street with traffic directors, elaborate floats, and 22 bands on a parade three miles long. Baltimore and Ohio officials and crews joined from multiple states for the celebration amid lodging shortages and extensive city displays.
Six judges announced awards for floats, community and junior leagues, railroad displays, military bands, fire companies, decorated stores and residences, and private autos after the parade. Top prize went to the Kiwanis Club Martinsburg for best overall float. other honors went to Handley School Winchester and several Virginia and West Virginia groups with cash prizes from 5 to 300 dollars.
The Norfolk and Western Railway delegation from Roanoke led the first parade of Apple Blossom Festival celebrations. The Roanoke Machine Shops Band arrived on a special train, with officials, wives, and four princesses Miss White Miss McMurdo Miss Carroll and Miss Funkhouser.
Editorial lauds the third Apple Blossom Festival for strong artistic and commercial success. It notes extensive advertising in hundreds of newspapers and thousands of movie screens, highlighting the region’s apple growing advantages and implying the ads could not be bought at regular rates.
The festival drew officers from four great railroad systems and many apple buyers and merchants who praised community cooperation. Pennsylvania Railroad showcased a red keystone float and four state-representing queens, with Altoona Kitties Band and Cumberland Valley Band providing music. readers urged forming a permanent Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival governance to sustain yearly success.
Police reported excellent crowd management during the two day festival with only three arrests all drunken. Over seven thousand out of town autos attended and traffic jams minimized by sworn extras and officers directing flow. No downtown accidents reported in town though several on exit roads.
Regular meeting delayed to Thursday evening May 13 at 8 o clock Captain Fred W Forney announces postponement. Also classified notices seek a settled woman or girl for house work and rent two houses at 22 8 Main St.

Floyd Bennett piloting the Fokker during a test flight at Kings Bay Spitzbergen causes a left ski to gouge snow and crash the plane. Byrd and crew describe the mishap as unnecessary and plan repairs and a third attempt. Reserve Pilot Parker briefly commanded the throttle. No injuries reported. mission continues with renewed caution.
A genuine wedding will be held on the Empire stage tomorrow at 8:30 PM with a local minister officiating. The contracting parties will have their names announced during the ceremony and the event is promoted by the Look Who's Here Company. An early attendance is advised due to seating and capacity.
