Floods sweep across Mississippi and neighboring states inundating towns. Local officials report widespread destruction with homes submerged and infrastructure strained as residents seek refuge and aid. Rescue teams work amid rising waters as weather agencies warn of continuing risk.
Devastation expands in northeastern Louisiana as the Mississippi floods widen, sending a new wave of refugees totaling about 250 000. Rescue machinery, led by former Governor Parker, moves swiftly to shelter the homeless and safeguard communities along the levees and backwaters.
Frederick County treasurer and Winchester city treasurer announce that poll tax for 1926 must be paid by May 7 1927 to be eligible to vote in November election. Any taxes remaining unpaid may require further action.
The City Council approved a license tax ordinance covering May 1 to December 31, raising levies on chiropractors, telegraph poles, and motor vehicles while adding new taxes on express firms, filling stations, and trucks. Mrs Angelina A Smoke wife of Dr Edgar B Smoke a noted White Hall physician in Frederick county died late yesterday afternoon at Memorial Hospital from pleuro pneumonia after a brief illness. She was 71, born September 16 1855 at Rest and married February 12 1878. The couple were lifelong companions and active in the White Hall community.
A Ford touring car carrying Daisy Golightly Hazel Kidwell Myrtle Combs Ruth Price Bertha Combs was struck by a freight engine near North Cameron street in Neffstown. The curve in the railroad right of way prevented sighting the approaching engine. The impact pushed the car along the tracks but no one was injured. Wheels were torn.
Greenwood Farm declares the summer milk price schedule effective in May. The new rates affect cheese and dairy product pricing for the upcoming season and are posted for farmers and buyers.
A Portland Maine high school group of 100 plus parents and students visited Winchester Virginia for Shenandoah Caverns and Handley School tours. Principal W H Emmons announced plans for a future Deering High School educational tour next spring to include Civil War battlefields and local sites.

Reardon was unanimously elected city solicitor by the Winchester Common Council to fill the unexpired term of Judge Philip Williams who resigned after being appointed judge of the seventeenth judicial circuit. The council praised Williams’ eight years of service and adopted a resolution of appreciation.
Adjutant Craig and assistants will canvass residences and businesses in Winchester starting tomorrow and daily thereafter until the city is collected, to raise money clothing paper and other aid for Mississippi flood sufferers.
