Sunlit Handley Bowl crowned Anne Eisenhower Shenandoah XLI as U S Senator Harry Byrd Jr presided. Pageant followed with public space turned into a full color stage as bands and choirs performed under a bright spring sky.
Eddie Bracken arrived from Washington to serve as Grand Marshal for Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival's Feature Parade with 220 units and 9,973 participants. Queen Shenandoah XLI Anne Eisenhower, escorted by dignitaries, was crowned as Fran Tarkenton spoke at a breakfast and Miss Shenandoah contest also took place amid perfect weather.
Sirens and brass heralded yesterday evening’s 2 hour Firemen's Parade led by Firemen's Marshal Skeeter Davis in a pale blue lace dress and silvery tiara. Cheryl Miller of Daktari rode in an unmarked car as crowds cheered and autographs flowed amid flashing engines and marching units.
Winners were announced for the Damascus Md Volunter Fire Department Best Appearing Uniformed Fire Company and other categories. Awards covered best pumper units, aerial ladders, band competitions, drum and bugle corps, and marching leaders with teams from Virginia Maryland West Virginia and Delaware.
The St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital team completed the worlds ninth heart transplant. Patient Everett Clair Thomas, 47, of Phoenix, an accountant, received a donor heart from a 3 year old girl injured in a gunshot brain injury. The donor's name was not released. The operation began after the donor arrived around 6 PM and the patient was moved to the operating room near midnight. The donor heart showed calcium deposits on a valve extending into the walls between chambers and into vessel openings.
Sen Harry F. Byrd Jr crowned the Shenandoah Valley Queen in Winchester yesterday. After reading the coronation writ he declared the people of Winchester and the Shenandoah Valley the most wonderful in the world. Byrd traveled from Washington to serve as Minister of the Crown before returning to the capital.
North Vietnam agreed to begin preliminary peace talks with the United States in Paris on May 10 or shortly after, a Hanoi radio report said. U.S. monitors received the broadcast as officials weighed Paris as a potential site for the talks amid a month-long dispute over venue.
A taxi loaded with explosives exploded beside the U.S.-South Vietnamese television complex in Saigon, killing three Vietnamese and wounding 25 Vietnamese and five Americans. The Viet Cong claim attributed attack damaged a nearby university building and the TV station. Police said a May Day raid on the national police headquarters was foiled.
A stationary front in South Carolina is forecast to move northeast today as a warm front. This shift brings warmer temperatures across the region, including Richmond, with a mild to warm day ahead.
