Leader of a 2 525 000 strong strike paralyses the country as 1 405 000 workers walk out. Printers refuse to set editorial titled For King and Country provoking wartime censorship stakes. Public taste of war time restrictions intensifies the crisis.
The Associated Press reports Britain poised for a general strike as 1,405,000 workers join 1,200,000 coal miners idle since Friday. Government arms for potential unrest with troops, rationing, and district control while unions vow to fight.
Arthur Clinton Slonaker, longtime Frederick County farmer and Winchester resident, died at his home 123 Valley Avenue after a brief illness. Born November 17, 1857 in High View West Virginia, he moved to Gainesboro Frederick County to farm and apple grow, leaving a widow Laura R. Slonaker and daughter Minnie Slonaker. Funeral services are set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at his home with Rev. Harry M. Crim officiating. interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers listed: Louis Bromley, O. T. Ritter, A. R. Breckenridge, Lloyd Poole, John Lampp and Charles Lemonds.
Members of Friendship Fire Co. No. 1 are asked to meet at the engine house Monday evening May 3 at 7 30 to receive uniforms and badges for the Festival parade. Capt. Fred W. Forney oversees as captain.
Traffic regulations issued for next Tuesday the first day of the Apple Blossom Festival. Parking allowed on Market Street both sides and parallel to curbs. Several streets have 9 am to post parades no parking periods and Loudoun Street closed to traffic and parking for the day and night.
James M Buncutter longtime Nain postmaster and merchant died at his home at 11 yesterday morning after over a year of ill health. He was 66 born August 21 in Frederick county and had operated a store at Nain for years before retiring. He leaves four children and two brothers and a sister. Funeral at Bethel Lutheran Church Nain tomorrow at 9 with Rev Tobler and Rev Daffin officiating. Burial Mount Hebron Winchester.
Regular patrons and city visitors can enjoy a new program each day this week at the Empire Theatre. A matinee musical show runs three days with a Saturday matinee, and two big night shows every evening. A complete feature and musical lineup is listed on an inside page at popular prices. Mack Noonan appeals to Winchester and Frederick County residents to lend cars with drivers for May 4 and 5 to transport visitors through local orchards. He notes voluntary car use is down versus prior festivals and urges orchard owners to cooperate by contacting his Amherst street garage.
Oliver B. Harriman 39, of Washington and formerly Rosemont near Berryville Virginia, was found dead in his Copenhagen apartment. He was to be transferred to Warsaw next month and had been a first secretary at the American Legation. Death attributed to heart disease after a preliminary exam. Harriman engaged to Helen V. Michell of Philadelphia. his mother ill in New York and father seriously ill in Atlantic City. He was nephew of prominent society figures and had a Harvard education before turning to farming and diplomacy.
Staunton Military Academy cadets six hundred strong arrived by Baltimore and Ohio Railroad near Winchester and marched to Camp Harry Flood Byrd at Rouss Spring. They will train five days and join the Apple Blossom Festival parade, with grading based on drill, conduct, guard duty, and camp organization.
R Gray Williams and Philip Williams trustees sold the Winchester Orchard Supply property at public auction for 11000 to Bond Brothers. The two story brick store and annexed warehouse on North Cameron street sold for exactly 40 percent of its assessed value. The Board of Review had set assessments at 40 percent of fair market value.
Children from John Kerr Public School skip the parade for the Apple Blossom Festival opening to present a large pageant titled The Pageant of the Seasons at Handley School Auditorium. Miss Edna Eighmey directs with over 500 participants and a long cast list of students and teachers in a four-season program ending with a recessional by the orchestra.

The parade committee is urged to spread out the parade on Wednesday. Units especially floats should move in more separated order to allow spectators to fully view each display and preserve the spectacle's beauty and significance.
Captain Thomas 8 Beardsworth the Staunton Military Academy bandmaster has been promoted to major in an order read before the cadet corps at retreat. He has served the SMA faculty nearly twenty years and organized the first band in 1909. The England native married Ada Bantz of Winchester, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs T M Bantz.
During the Apple Blossom Fete plan a trip to Shenandoah Caverns located 45 miles south near Mt. Jackson on the Main Highway. The site promises beauty beyond description with views from Caverns Hill and a Modern Hotel on the grounds.
