The Firemen's Parade in Winchester drew two and a half hours of nighttime spectacle with 216 units. Firemen's Marshal Charlie Louvin praised the event many times, while Miss Penny DeHaven enjoyed the festival as a long time participant and guest.
Winners of the Firemen's Parade competitions were announced after last night’s event. awards included Best Appearing Uniformed Fire Co first Damascus Volunteer Fire Co second OwL Volunteer Fire Co and more across Maryland Pennsylvania and Virginia with top bands and drum corps named. Queen Shenandoah XLII Nancy Hardin appeared in the procession while spectators lined the entire route.
Nancy Anne Hardin, 1968 Apple Blossom Queen, is crowned on Handley High School steps. U S Senator Robert Byrd and Senator Harry F. Byrd Jr. administer the oath as the crowd cheers. Pageantry includes maids of honor, ROTC cadets, and a court tableau with officials and local dignitaries.
A 10 18 p m fire severely damaged the Paul E Dellinger residence at 504 N Loudoun St with most damage on the attic and third floor. Fire officials say water and smoke harmed the second floor and roof while investigators probe the origin of the blaze.

Firemen and police in Charleston faced fires, vandalism, false alarms, and rock throwing during a tense night sparked by a hospital workers strike. About 30 people were arrested under a 9 PM to 5 AM curfew. two fires were set deliberately, one in a storage shed by a firebomb and another in a supermarket with kerosene on the steps. Reverend Ralph David Abernathy placed a full page ad to disavow a claim linked to the conflict.
