Broadway Column: Winchell Credits Ads With Career Comeback
In a Broadway Column piece by Mark Barron New York Paul Winchell recalls polio period that led him to read ads for ventriloquism and weight lifting. He began ventriloquism lessons, later weight lifting, and recovered fully. He now tours hospital wards with Jerry Mahoney and will host a new NBC show with Mahoney in April. He notes a touching hospital encounter with Barbara Nicola, a Greek refugee adopted by Tallulah Bankhead, who warmed to the Jerry doll after Winchell demonstrated the puppet’s movements. The first issue of Modern Electrics appeared in 1908.
