U S helicopters suffered two shoot downs and another damaged as ground fire hit a rescue effort in the central highlands 21 miles northwest of Kontum. One American crewman was killed and six wounded, with twelve South Vietnamese paratroopers wounded aiding the rescue. An OH6 was shot down near Saigon with two crewmen hurt. The Saigon command also said 33 North Vietnamese troops were killed in clashes near Pleiku and Kontum.
Winchester students end classes today and start a longer Easter break until Tuesday April 4. Frederick County pupils skip four days then resume Monday. Clarke County pupils observe Good Friday and Easter Monday, returning Tuesday.

A packed commuter train plowed into the rear of another at a National Railway station near Tokyo during the morning rush. Police said more than 500 people were injured. Each train had 10 coaches and carried over 1,500 passengers.
The State Health Department announced plans to open fourteen community based centers for alcoholism in Virginia including Winchester Abingdon Roanoke Arlington Alexandria Fairfax Charlottesville Lynchburg Danville Fredericksburg Petersburg Norfolk Newport News and Richmond. Centers will provide medical care 24 hour emergency services social and psychological support residential and recovery programs and community education funded by a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism grant and state funds. Dr. Thomas R. Dundon said the long term goal is comprehensive prevention treatment and rehabilitation, acknowledging progress will be gradual and stressing community involvement.
