Guerrillas Pause Violence as Northern Ireland Protest Hits

A power blackout disrupted much of Northern Ireland during a two day Protestant protest against Britain's rule. Catholic guerrillas began easing their campaign of violence as tensions rose across Belfast and surrounding areas.

Barbara Morris and Charles Duvall Elected to Key Virginia Roles

Barbara Morris and Charles R. Duvall Jr., both of Winchester, were elected to top posts in the Virginia Young Democratic Clubs during a Hampton convention. Morris became national committeewoman and Morris seats on the State Democratic Central Committee, while Duvall becomes seventh district chairman. The convention elected state officers including T. J. Markow president and J. Arthur Gandels Jr. vice president. The event featured former North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford as banquet speaker amid shifts toward moderates.

Supreme Court Backs Ban on Cigarette Ads on Radio and TV

The Supreme Court upheld the 1969 ban on cigarette advertising on radio and television. NAB and six broadcasters failed to win appeals 7 to 2 and 6 to 2, with only Justices Douglas and Brennan urging hearings. The ruling affirmed a panel decision supporting the advertising blackout beginning Jan 2 1971.

Insurrection Crushed in El Salvador Martial Law Declared

In El Salvador government forces crushed a weekend military uprising and imposed martial law after heavy fighting. Officials reported 100 to 200 dead and more than 200 wounded. Gen. Fidel Sanchez Hernandez said rebels captured him at his home and held him for over 12 hours before air strikes compelled surrender.

UAW Members Approve Abex Contract Ratified by Union

Local 149 UAW members vote 288 to 163 in favor of a new Abex Corporation contract. The agreement runs March 20 1972 to March 16 1975 and adheres to 5.5 percent wage guidelines set by the Presidential Wage Control Board. Company negotiators include Mallory Spencer Brown and union reps Moore Hepner Crosen DeHaven Jones Martin.

Vicki Giannini Wins Ruritan Zone Title

Vicki Giannini, 19, was crowned Miss Ruritan Zone 1972 at the Zone 1 contest in Frederick County Clarke County. She is a James Wood High School graduate now attending the University of Virginia. Miss Hart and Miss Nydam finished as runners up with Miss Holly Brumback winning Miss Congeniality. Giannini will appear in the Apple Blossom Festival parade and next month’s Shenandoah Beauty and Personality contest.

Clarke County considers 55 cent tax hike across budget

Clarke County Supervisors publish a proposed $3.80 per 100 rate to fund a $2,179,092 budget, a 55 cent increase from the present 3.25 rate. A public hearing is set for April 18 at 7 30 p.m. at Berryville courthouse.

Beard, 53, was hospitalized after chest pains amid testimony about ITT settlements and a possible $400,000 guarantee to San Diego.
