Viet Cong rockets hit a Da Nang shantytown while ground assaults target U S and South Vietnamese forces in the second largest city. In northwest of Saigon, U S troops report 123 enemy killed on day one of a major counteroffensive. one American killed and 23 wounded. Civilian casualties include 13 dead and 21 wounded.
Barbara Jo Rubin, North American trailblazer jockey, is guest of honor at Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. She rode Cohesion to victory at 6 ½ furlongs at Charles Town and has won two races at Pimlico and Aqueduct, with widespread media appearances including Ed Sullivan Show and Kraft Music Hall. Rubin plans to ride in Shenandoah Downs Apple Blossom Purse after May 2 and speaks on riding over gender notions. She will also appear at Rodeo Days in San Antonio as Grand Marshal and attend Sports Breakfast with Dizzy Dean and Leroy Keyes.
Secretary Melvin R. Laird announced to Congress that plans to raise military pay by 1.2 billion this year are dropped. The existing 1.8 billion hike remains, but future increases will be re examined due to budget pressures.
A House Armed Services subcommittee report warns the United States has fallen behind the Soviet Union in naval power due to an aging fleet and weak shipbuilding. It calls for an immediate, years-long construction program to reach 850 ships by the 1980s, including 41 Polaris submarines and only nuclear attack subs.
Space officials decide Apollo 10 will orbit the moon for 63 hours and not land. Two crewmen will pilot the descent stage to within 10 miles of the surface while the ascent stage remains in lunar orbit and the crew returns to Earth in the command module. A July launch for Apollo 11 is planned to attempt the first lunar landing.

A Calypso operation by 315 paratroopers and Marines landed on Anguilla at dawn aided by two frigates Rotheay and Minerva. Acting President Webster fled, leaders unconfirmed, as Anthony Lee arrived to assume British authority. Anguilla had seceded from the St. Kitts Nevis federation in 1967 and set an April 3 presidential vote.

Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird told Congress the emerg ing Communist Chinese nuclear threat will be one of our gravest national security problems of the 1970s and the Soviet Union is challenging the United States with more ICBMs than the U S land based missiles. He spoke in a closed Senate Armed Forces Committee session on the Pentagon budget and Nixon’s revised Sentinel ABM plan.
Theodore Meriam told a House subcommittee federal investigators could curb campus disorders more than cutting funds to student leaders. He urged help identifying conspiracies and ensuring balanced TV coverage as Edith Green opens hearings on San Francisco State College disturbances. Green proposed a tax deduction for working students to ease college expenses.
Israeli jets attacked Arab guerrilla positions near the Gilead Mountains marking the third such raid in four days. Four warplanes strafed and bombed targets with flames and smoke rising. The strike followed a mortar attack on Israeli forces near Neveb nine miles south of the Sea of Galilee. The army reported no casualties from that action.

Pope Paul VI announces a rapid July trip outside Italy to Kampala Uganda to consecrate a shrine to African martyrs and attend a bishops conference. It will be his seventh international journey and his second Africa visit, following 1962 stops in South Africa Ghana and Nigeria.
Secretary told Congress no indication of a program to significantly cut U S military contribution in South Vietnam. On return from a personal inspection he criticized U S leaders in Vietnam for prioritizing operations over helping South Vietnam defend itself.
At dawn ten 100 pound rockets exploded in a slum near a Navy pier marking the heaviest civilian toll in Da Nang since the spring offensive began February 23. A Korean civilian worker was killed, three Marines wounded. South of Da Nang 400 NVA troops shelled a U.S. Marine camp with flamethrowers and rockets, leaving 12 Americans dead and 30 wounded while Marines reported 72 enemy killed. Two NVA attackers briefly breached lines before being felled. Additional ground actions occurred near Dien Ban as Saigon prepared another rocket attack, halted by vigilance of GIs James Wales and Eugene Griesing who directed mortar fire after spotting radar traces. Dawn found six 122mm rockets aimed at Saigon with wires converging into a single line.
