A force of more than 10,000 American troops launched a massive counter attack northwest of Saigon to forestall any Viet Cong or North Vietnamese drive on the South Vietnamese capital. AP Wirephoto
A truck driver from Hickory North Carolina parked by the intersection of W Piccadilly and N Washington Streets yesterday around 11 am when a tree fell and struck the tractor trailer. The front end loader and a Potomac Edison employee using a cherry picker assisted as workmen sawed the tree. Damage to the truck was estimated at 75 dollars. Officer Harry Miller identified the driver as Billy Gene Bolick.
Miami AP reports two separate hijackings reached Havana Cuba on the same day in 1969. A Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Augusta carried 64 aboard when a small man threatened with a box claimed a bomb and demanded Cuba. The Faucett Airlines Peru flight from Lima to Arequipa diverted via Guayaquil and forced eight crew to land in Havana.
Leafa Whetzell reports a flock of about 15 wild geese heading north over Rock Enon from the North Mountain fire tower. Winchester Frederick County Conservation Club meets Wednesday March 19 at 7 30 p.m. Round Hill Fire Co.
In Budapest the Warsaw Pact approved measures to strengthen its combined forces and renewed an all European security proposal after a brief two hour political committee session. The communiques avoided mention of border clashes, Vietnam, and Middle East issues.
A pipeline explosion at a hilltop ruptured a Shell Oil 10 inch line sending aviation gasoline into a creek and hamlet. One man suffered severe burns and six more were treated as a 50 foot high wall of flame destroyed a post office general store and residence and several vehicles. Fire burned about half an hour and authorities found explosives near the ruptured pipe.
Virginia forestry officials urge no outdoor fires and extreme caution due to dry grass and winds. Nine area residents have summonses for illegal fires as 20 of 46 Frederick County fires last month were grass or brush fires. Fires must be extinguished by midnight and none before 4 p.m. under state law.
Egyptian and Israeli forces fought along half the Suez Canal for two hours with both sides reporting casualties. Cairo said Israelis fired first at Port Taufiq and Suez at 11 am. Israel reported one wounded and a cease-fire proposal by U.N. observers ended fighting at 1 15 pm.
The Winchester School Board announced approval of a 195000 loan from the State Literary Fund for its share of the Dowel J. Howard Vocational School, a joint project with Frederick and Clarke Counties. The notice came from J G Blount Jr of the State Board of Education in Richmond during the board’s monthly meeting.
The Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros Circus will appear Sunday April 27 sponsored by the Judges Athletic Association to fund a scholarship for a Handley athlete. Arrangements place the show on the Garber property near the Town & Country store on Rt. 50 east. The three ring circus features 18 elephants and 39 tractor trailers with a lions and tigers act led by Captain Dave Hoover.
Five plane loads of British paratroopers and police experts totaling nearly 200 men departed in fog and rain for Anguilla to quell the mutiny. Prime Minister Harold Wilson consulted with generals and admirals as the frigate Rothesay arrived near Antigua to join Rhyl and Minerva in a coordinated air sea approach. The Anguillan crisis traces to a 1967 rebellion by a 250 man self declared army led by Ronald Webster, amid tensions with St. Kitts Nevis federation and opposition to Robert Bradshaw.
President Nixon told a 17 nation disarmament conference in Geneva that the United States hopes to begin talks with the Soviet Union on limits to anti ballistic missile systems. He spoke after a seven month recess. The Soviet Union proposed a treaty banning all sea bed installations. Nixon urged moving from confrontation to negotiations.
A Vietnamese woman and her children peer from behind barbed wire at a government compound housing Viet Cong sympathizers in Dien Ban, 12 miles south of Da Nang. A night attack on an adjoining facility left six inmates dead and 18 wounded after five mortar rounds hit.
More than 10,000 American troops launched a compression-style drive 40 miles northwest of Saigon to halt a Vietcong and North Vietnamese push toward the capital. Up to 7,500 North Vietnamese 7th Division troops were believed moving along the Saigon River as air and artillery strikes killed at least 28 enemy soldiers.
