Jefferson Sub Has One Fizzle One Success
The atomic submarine Thomas Jefferson launched a Polaris A2 missile successfully after an earlier failure. The two missiles were fired an hour apart as the submarine cruised about 30 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral. The second missile flew far downrange while the first landed in the water near the launch point. Cause of trouble was not known. The failure broke 11 straight submarine launches and was only the second fizzle in 25 underwater shots.
