Thousands packed Shenandoah Memorial Park for Patsy Cline’s funeral. Cars filled the area from the city edge, with parking scarce and onlookers snatching flowers and wreaths. Honorary pallbearers noted the crowd’s emotion while traffic clogged routes after services.

A low pressure system brought wet snow and cool air to the valley area. More than an inch had fallen in Staunton by noon, with temperatures reaching 36 after a low of 30. Rain expected later tonight and Thursday or Friday. Handley High School closed an hour early at 2 p.m.
Lt Col Jean Marie Bastien Thiry was executed for leading the failed August assassination attempt on President Charles de Gaulle. Clemency spared two plotters, Alain Debourgrenet de la Tocnaye and Jacques Prevost, who were sentenced to life terms.
Byron O Brumback of the Opequon District announces his bid for another term as chair of the Frederick County Board of Supervisors. Also a candidate is Charles E Garber who has served since 1959 and was board chair in 1960.
Mrs. Worsley and Mrs. Clore urged the county board to move meetings to evening hours and to consider three measures. They proposed transferring meetings, creating a dog rabies vaccination clinic, and granting about 18 000 to the Winchester Frederick County Recreation Department for staff salaries at the War Memorial Building. They argued evening sessions would help working residents and questioned the lack of visible tax relief.
West Virginia lawmakers, after a 60 day session, reconvened in an extended budget session to finish appropriations for the next fiscal year. Conferees narrowed operating general revenue to just under 149.8 million, a 6.9 million rise, with a teacher pay raise accounting for most of the increase.
In Damascus, Iraqi Deputy Premier Ali Said El Saadi urged Syria to join Iraq, the United Arab Republic, Algeria, and Yemen in a unified command to deter outside aggression. He also proposed a political planning council as a step toward broader Arab unity. Demonstrators welcomed the idea while security hunted opponents of Baath rule.
Chancellor Adenauer reportedly returned an unopened letter from Georges Bidault requesting asylum in Germany. Bavarian authorities would handle asylum decisions, with Bonn seeking interior ministry advice. Bidault, sought on treason charges, was found by police near the Swiss border and may be expelled or extradited to another country.
William F. Triplett 35 of Mt. Falls announces candidacy for Frederick County Board of Supervisors Back Creek District as an independent. He pledges to enhance education while protecting finances and cites traffic-fine revenue for the State Literary Fund and reducing highway deaths.
The Associated Press reports Virginia’s traffic toll reached 151 after 11 weekend fatalities. Names include Ramiro Colon 22 of Marqus killed on U.S. 17 near Glenns, and J C Leggett 43 of Denbigh killed on U.S. 60 in Newport News.
President Kennedy told Congress unemployment remains the nation’s top economic problem and urged tax cuts and growth programs to spur job creation. He cited a manpower report forecasting 1967 unemployment at 5.5 million and argued education and training must rise to meet changing job needs. Productivity gains and underused labor contribute to a lower standard of living.
